How do you make
yourself cry?
Here are my best thoughts on crying. If you are having
a difficult time crying in a performance, then the
problem is with your acting technique, not your
crying technique. Which is why you are having
such a hard time fixing it. You are trying to correct
the wrong thing.
Don't try to develop some mechanical technique to
make yourself cry. Your character, in the context
of the play, isn't using some technique to make himself
cry. The conflict or release of conflict within the
character, intentions, etc. is making the character
cry. If you focus your attention on a mechanical
technique, or focus on some imagined, out-of-script sad
event, then you are no longer focused on your
character. Your mind is not on the character and the
circumstances. Your mind is now on the actor trying to
cry. Not the character, thinking, remembering,
desiring, reacting, feeling the urge to cry, resisting
the urge to cry.
Focus on your character and in playing the moment
believably. Focus on the through-line, subtext,
intentions, timing and all that other acting stuff (see
the FREE Acting Lessons on the AWOL
homepage .) If you did your job well, the tears
will be there when they are supposed to be there. Why?
Because if it is believable that the character should
cry, and if you are fully absorbed in playing the
character, then you will cry.
What if you are not fully absorbed in playing the
character? The stage is not so predictable performance
after performance. For camera work, take after take.
What if the tears don't come? If you are doing your
acting job well, then don't sweat the tears. Heck, most
members of the audience will swear you actually cried
even though you did not. Why? because your
belief in the character becomes their reality.
That's the magic of acting.
For camera work, if all acting efforts fail, the
closeness of a shot and the level of"realism"required
might indicate other measures be taken. The director
simply shoots the scene without your tears, cuts,
places some fake tears on your face and shoots the
scene again but from another perspective, then edits
the two shots together melding the moment just before
you were supposed to cry with the moment you
began"crying"with the fake tears in place - to make it
appear as if you cried real tears. The different
perspectives cover for the fakery - just like it does
with the other thousands of edits which make up a film.
You can cheat a lot in camera work.

NEEDS TO KNOW.
How did acting
(or theatre) begin?
Acting originated on Pelican
island, which is an island in the middle of the
Missouri river, north of St. Louis. It began there in
the year 5003 BC.
Of course there was no written
record of what play these first thespians produced, but
the recent discovery of ancient drawings on the
basement walls of Rudolph J. Penderbottom's quaint
little Victorian home in Cahokia seems to indicate the
first play (a musical) was a clever cross between
Gilligans island and Promethius Bound. Odd as it may
seem, this combination proved highly successful and
toured up and down the Missouri river, playing to
appreciative Native-American audiences. Eventually, the
little troup hit the big-time, playing all the villages
along the shores of the mighty
Mississippi.
The theatre was built upon
several, tethered rafts made of bulrushes and river
mud. Torches were used for lighting the acting area.
Lights were dimmed by various stage hands (raft hands
as they were known back then) standing in front of the
torches, thus blocking the full intensity of the lights
at the appropriate moment. There is no record of what
the raft hands were paid, but it is a good bet that
union rules would have required extra allowance be paid
for working with fire.
The play lasted three and one
half days without intermissions. Audiences back then
apparently had a lot more stamina then today's pampered
play goers. Unfortunately, a mishap initiated by a
disgruntled raft hand resulted in the entire production
going up in flames somewhere between Hannible and the
Lock and Dam near Saverton. The troup was devastated by
the financial loss as insurance had not yet been
conceived.
Times being as they were, it
was impossible to find a financial backer willing to
assume the risk. After several unsuccessful attempts to
mount lesser productions on neighboring Cora island,
the group disbanded. Acting fell into a deep, deep
slumber. Upon the charred remains of the bulrush rafts,
acting drifted down the Mississippi and out into the
uncharted Gulf.
When acting awoke, it found
itself in ancient Greece. But that's another chapter in
AWOL's Condensed History of Acting.
There's no business like show
business.
If you have a
school project or report you want us to help you
with...
We do not do school projects.
However, you should be able to gleen a fair quantity of
information from the FREE Lessons on the AWOL
homepage.
If you think you
might be too old to get into acting...
It is never too late to start
acting. However, your chances of earning a living as a
professional actor are extremely small. Of course this
is the same for just about anyone who wants to become a
professional actor. Take a look at the AWOL lesson, AN ACTOR'S
LIFE... on the AWOL homepage.
If acting is something you
feel driven to do, I suggest you take some classes and
get involved in community theatre and whatever local
film, TV and industrial productions you can find. This
will help satisfy your creative desires and earn you a
few dollars once in a while. Who knows, after awhile,
things might lead you in a professional direction after
all. Just don't quit the day job yet.
Considering how competitive
the business is and how many actors have a big training
and experience jump on you, you will have to be quite
focused and work hard to get trained, develop
experience and learn about the business. You should not
wait any longer to prepare yourself to compete. This
means lots of workshops, classes, auditions and reading
every acting book you can find. It means classes in
singing, dance, literature (even poetry), music,
improvisation, etc. It means a lot of hard, focused
work.

My parents won't
support my decision to become an actor. What can I
do?
Here are a few negotiating
strategies that can help:
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS
remain calm, respectful and rational. You cannot
expect your parents to change their attitudes
overnight. Angry outbursts as a reaction to your
disappointment will only set them more firmly against
the whole idea. Building support from reluctant parents
is complex and must be approached objectively and
calmly.
Tantrums, shouting matches,
defiance, anger and whining are not acceptable
behaviors for a professional actor. Show your parents
you are mature, responsible, trustworthy, and can
handle disappointment gracefully, like a pro. These are
important traits for an actor to possess.
Negotiations frequently
involve setbacks. How you handle those setbacks is an
important part of continued success. Keep in mind that
your ultimate goal, your long-term goal, is to
help your parents feel comfortable, be accepting and be
supportive of your desire and efforts to study and do
acting.
You need your parents on your
side. This is new for them. Work on the idea slowly.
Don't shove it at them all at once. It could take
months or a year or more to make headway. Success take
its own time. Those who are prepared and ready
recognize it when it arrives. Don't rush blindly toward
some imagined wisp of stardom. Prepare yourself for
success.
In the mean time, demonstrate
your interest in acting by:
- Attending local plays - not
just movies.
- Find out about your local community
theatres and subscribe to their
newsletters.
- Read lots and lots of books
about acting so you can learn something about acting
and the business of acting, even if you cannot attend
classes. You can find acting books in the library or
you can purchase some through AWOL's
Book Search.
- Read the FREE
Acting Lessons on the AWOL homepage.
- Take any performance skill
classes you can in and outside of school. This
includes acting, dance, singing, voice, music, even
such things as forensics, juggling, martial
arts...These are very valuable skills for an actor to
have. You never know what you will called upon to do
for a role. The more skills you are competent in, the
more employable you are - and better able to pay the
monthly bills when you are on your own as a
struggling actor in NY or LA.
They will still be making
movies when you are prepared and ready - and when you
have your parents on your side.
I have a part
where I have to do a romantic kiss. I feel awkward. I'm
not sure how to do this. Can you help?
Use these basic acting
techniques. The first technique is to remember that
this kiss has nothing to do with you. You are not
kissing your partner. Your character is kissing another
character. Technique number two is to keep in mind that
your character has reasons that lead him/her to want to
kiss the other character in a certain way. Your job is
to determine what those reasons are and in what way is
your character going to kiss this other character. You
should take a look at the AWOL lessons THE ESSENCE OF
ACTING and HELP! I GOT THE PART! NOW WHAT? on
the AWOL homepage.
There are two kinds of kissing
for the stage. A stage kiss and a real kiss.
A stage kiss is not really a
kiss on the lips. You can "cover" the kiss - obscuring
from view by a hand, a prop or at such an angle so
that, from the audience's perspective, the kiss appears
to be real. While covering, the actors actually touch
cheeks without mouth-to-mouth contact.
Stage kisses are prefered to
real kisses if possible (and it frequently is possible)
because it is more hygienic.
If a stage kiss is impossible,
or cannot be made possible, then a real kiss must be
done. But it is simply a pressing of the lips, in as
convincing a manner as possible. No tongue, licking,
slurping or any other such stuff.
Sometimes, due to
embarrasment, guys get all stupid over this kissing
thing. Don't tolerate stupid remarks, comments, leering
or sexual advances. If anything uncomfortable happens,
set your limits right away. That will help keep the
whole thing on a professional basis.
Becoming comfortable with
kissing on stage is, like everything else, a matter of
doing it enough times that you hardly think about it.
Expect to be embarrassed at first. Eventually, after
you rehearse the scene enough times, (especially if
your partner is mature about it or stays within the
defined limits) you will not be embarrassed.
Opening night will be
important. Stay focused in your job, not on who is in
the audience. Do the kiss and move on.
If actual kissing is required,
I suggest you and your partner discuss the scene first,
and make sure you both do a mouth rinse and have a
breath mint before the scene - and no onions or garlic
for lunch.
Don't be alarmed if emotions
well-up inside of you. Emotions frequently arise.
Simply admit that the close, intimate contact is
causing emotions to surface. The emotions will subside
if you accept them and rationally address them. Trying
to ignore them will only make it all quite awkward and
last longer than would otherwise be the
case.
I just recently
attended an open call for a model/talent convention and
have been selected to attend. I am pretty excited about
this. The people who selected me told me they believed I
have what it takes, and the agents would be really
interested in seeing me. I am interested in your advice
regarding attendance at this convention. They are asking
for a lot of money to attend. Is it worth the money
invested? Is this a good way to get into the modeling or
acting business?
Model/talent searches are a
terrible way to try to get into the modeling or acting
business.
They are expensive and yield
little of value. They are scams. They are a scams
because *MOST* (almost all) of the people who attend
such events receive little of any real value for their
money. A few workshops, a quick walk on a runway and a
"chance" to be seen by "agents" is hardly worth the
many hundreds - even thousands - of dollars these
ridiculous model searches charge.
All legitimate modeling
agencies hold open calls at their offices - at NO
CHARGE!!! Just call the agencies and ask.
The people who organize
model/talent searches are fully aware that over 95% of
those who attend will not be "chosen".
They are fully aware that of
those who are "chosen", only a few will actually gain
any significant work on any regular basis.
The people who organize these
searches take in hundreds of thousands of dollars in
fees. Almost all the people who attend receive little
of any value toward a professional modeling or acting
career.
That is the scam.
The information you provide to
the "professional scout" (usually someone who knows
little if anything about the modeling business) at the
model/talent search "open call" was likely sold to
modeling and acting schools, photographers or anyone
else interested in selling services to naive but eager
model/actor wannabees..
The "scouts" are trained to
get as many people to pay to attend the search as
possible - whether the attendees shows any merit or
not. The scouts use a lot of flattery and misleading
statements to accomplish this goal.
The agents who are at the
search are paid a sizable fee to attend. Many of the
"agents" are not really agents. They are agent
assistants or other people who have no decision making
authority and lack the ability to actually sign an
attendee.
Often times, the staff of
these searches and even the "agents" use the open calls
and the search convention to find cute women and men to
"date" (have sex with). This will not advance
anyone's chances of launching a modeling career. It
just makes fools out of the attendees.
The organizers usually require
agents to "callback" a certain number of candidates,
whether they are interested in all the candidates or
not.
A callback does not mean you
have been "choosen" or are on your way to a career. It
simply means that the "agent" wants to talk to you
again. Most attendees who are called back do not
ultimately receive any representation.
There are far-far better, less
costly and more productive ways to get into the
modeling and acting business.
I suggest you head to the
library or spend $20 or $30 at your local bookstore and
get a book or two about the modeling and acting
business so you can learn something about how things
really work. It is far, far cheaper than wasting money
on silly model/talent searches.
My question is
about using a stage name. My last name is long, nobody
can pronounce it correctly, and to be truthful I don't
care for it much. I am wondering if to use a stage name
do I have to legally change my last name? If not do I
have to explain to directors etc. that it's only a stage
name? Thank you very much for your
help.
You do not have to legally change
you name. However, if you choose a stage name that a
professional actor already has, you would not be able
to use it if you ever hoped to join an actor union and
get paid for your acting work. So choose
carefully.
You do not have to mention
that you are using a stage name. However, if you get
paid, you will have to make sure your checks are made
out to whatever name you use for your bank accounts and
that you don't run into mix-ups with social security
and taxes. Talk to your bank about setting up your
accounts to make that possible.
If you are
having problems with your voice:
I suggest you find a competent,
qualified voice coach who can evaluate how you use your
voice and then give you useful exercises that will
allow you to speak for the stage without ruining your
voice or causing physical problems.
How can you find a voice
coach? If you are in school, ask your drama or english
teachers if they know of any competent professionals in
the field.
Try contacting your local
universities or colleges that have theatre or music
(singing) programs. Ask if there is anyone on the
faculty who does private coaching or if they can
recommend a coach.
You might also contact your
local professional theatre groups and ask them the same
questions.
You can also contact a
professional speech therapist or pathologist. This
might seem a bit drastic, but problems with the human
voice is their business. Try looking in the yellow
pages under "Speech" or contact your local
hospital.
I read your
theory about the history of acting that was posted on
your site. I am wondering where you attained this
information. Did you read this in a book or is this just
personal theory or what? What is the archaeological
evidence supporting these "conclusions". Also there are a
few spelling errors throughout your site, just thought
you would like to know. Thank you for offering a useful
service.
Thanks for your input. The theory
to which you refer is discussed at length in the third
edition of Oxford's Companion, a Guide to Theatre
Stuff: Oxford Universality Press, 1951; edited by
Walter Plinge and George Spelvin.
This definitive work discusses
and annotatively footnotes and ibids the true origins
of theatre along with honorable mentions to post-origin
theatrical productions such as The Emperor Jones, All
God's Chillun Got wings and Aunt Mahaly's
Cabin.

If you do not
live in the United States, but would like to come to the
States to become an actor:
There are literally thousands of
well-trained, experienced and well connected
American-born actors in LA, NY and elsewhere in the US.
They understand the system. They live in it day after
day. They are knowledgeable about the industry and,
believe me, they have spent many years studying,
struggling and "paying their dues". They do not have
any visa problems or restrictions and they have great
personalities and talent - innate and practised.
These people are your
competition. What are your chances? Very slim. I
suggest you spend a few years where you live;
auditioning, taking classes, building a solid body of
good acting work and developing knowledge of the
industry and some industry connections before you make
the leap across the pond.
To find out the visas you need
to study acting or to work as a paid actor in the
States, contact the United States Department of
Immigration and Naturalization Service re: student visa
and visas for working as a performer in the
U.S.
If you are
wondering how to get your talented child involved in
professional acting:
You will need to find an agent
who works with children. However, there is much more to
it than just calling agents. I suggest you get a book
or two on the subject of kids and the acting business.
You can find books in your local library system (ask
the librarian for assistance - possibly through the
library loan system.) You can also find books at your
local bookstores or on-line. See
AWOL's Book Search.
If you are
seeking acting training programs:
A course of education would be
that which helps you learn to become competent in
acting, singing, dance, voice, music and other
perfomance skills. Early in a career, being competent
in all performing skills will make the difference
between getting the month's rent paid and eating or
living at the Y and skipping a few meals.
Your training will likely be a
combination of college and/or conservatory training,
workshops and private coaching. You also need as much
acting experience as possible. This means live stage
work along with whatever films, commercials,
interactive, radio, etc. that you can get - as part of
a formal training program as-well-as summer-stock and
other summer work and whatever local opportunities you
can manage.
Of course, along the way you
will also make many friends and acquaintances, some of
whom might one day be in a position to help you advance
your professional goals - or you to help
them.
Most formal acting programs
focus on stage acting. This is not a bad thing. Stage
acting will give you far, far more opportunities to
actually act than screen or TV acting. This means you
will have many more opportunities to develop your
skills. Screen actors can go for a long, long time
between roles. Stage work is where actors really learn
to act.
It is not too difficult to
adjust from stage technique to screen or TV technique.
It is more difficult to go from screen and TV technique
to stage technique.
Also, stage acting in front of
a live audience is a lot more fun. The applause is
great!!!
Which college or conservatory
program is best for you? Get one of these books, or see
if your local library has a fairly current
copy.
These are extremely useful
resources. They are loaded with information about
schools, what is required and what you need to do to
apply. They are also full of excellent information
about evaluating schools and programs to suit your
needs, audition techniques and much more. Well worth
the investment. Will save you a lot of time and guess
work when planning for your higher education. You might
also save yourself from making a costly mistake about
the program you choose.
Also, you can use the
AWOL Search Machine to locate training
programs.
I need to do an accent and I am so stuck. Do
you have any tips???
Head for the library to find
tapes, records or CDs about speaking with whatever
accent you need. You can also use the AWOL book search
site to find books, tapes and CDs on: Accents, Voice and Voice-Over
Work.
Focus a lot on vowel formation
and diction. To perfect your accent, there is only one
solution - practise, practise, practise,
practise...
I am 26, a
female from europe and I have an accent. I'm taking some
acting classes - acting is my passion. I'm working on
reducing my accent but of course it is not going to go
away completely. I am very dedicated to my goal of
becoming a real actress. I am moving to New York just for
this purpose-going to auditions, taking more acting
classes and trying to get into theater and maybe TV. My
question is: do I have any hope to get any roles with my
accent? I know I have the talent but how will the casting
directors look at the fact that english is my second
language?
Your accent can be an asset. It
sets you apart from other actors and might actually put
you in an advantageous position.
To you, someone from Europe,
Americans speak with an accent. If an American actor
can learn to speak in a near-perfect foreign accent,
you can learn to speak in a near-perfect American
accent (for those times when sounding very American is
what you need to do.)
Do you have a
list of good names I could use for my " stage name", (
Lori, doesn't seem like it would be a famous actresses
name)?
Change your name? I don't see
why. It is at least as good as, say, Tallulah. But if
you really want to change your name, perhaps you could
change it to - - - - - - - Tallulah!!! Worked quite
well for many years for Mz. Bankhead.
If you have
decided that you need a stage name, then change it
early on as you develop your professional work and
image. And don't change it very often. As you seek out
professional contacts and recognition, you will confuse
people very quickly if you suddenly change your name.
You do not have to legally change you name. However,
if you choose a stage name that a professional actor
already has, you would not be able to use it if you
ever hoped to join an actor union and get paid for your
acting work. So choose carefully.

New Questions
From AWOLers
From Sherry: Hi. I am a 14 year old girl i am great at acting and singing. However, i live in lahore pakistan and i dont think there is any disney channel studio here. I have no way of auditioning. I can go to london but only from june to august Hw cn i audition? thanx
Hi Sherry. It is not too likely you will be able to audition for Disney Channel programs. However, if you are determined to become an actress despite the Disney Channel disappointment, then I suggest you continue developing your skills and seek out any local opportunities you can find. You might find audition opportunities in London when you are there, but I do not know what the work rules are if you are a citizen of England.
From Heather: Hello,
I live in Sacramento, CA. I was wondering that since I dont live close to LA that the nearest place for movie auditions would be in San Francisco. Does San Francisco have a wide variety of auditions and agencys that are for real and not scams? Can someone get many acting jobs in the San Francisco area? Thank you.
Hi Heather. There are many opportunities to perform in San Francisco. To find out how to find those opportunities, agents, casting directors and such actor things, see the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Emily: Will doing historical reenactments (say, at Colonial Williamsburg) help my acting career in any way? I mean, will it look good on a resume?
Hi Emily. It will do for starters. The knowledge and experience you acquire might even help you get roles in Discovery Channel or History Channel programs or PBS type documentaries.
From Jamie: i really want to become an actor, but wut i have read u need money and agents and all these different things, i just want to know how to make my dream come true without having to do all this, or atleast get help doing it.
Hi Jamie. Help is on the way. Just see the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Mike: I recently went to Medevil Times. If you are not familiar with it, it is a resturant, and during your dinner, there is a jousting competition and a sword-fight. My question is this-If I got a job as one of the jousters, could that be considered theatrical experience? They don't have many lines, but they are very active otherwise.
Hi Mike. Yes, that counts. The skills you develop might also help lead to a film role if they are looking for actors with swordplay and jousting skills.
From RK: I want to get an agent, is it necessary for me too have a union? Do you need experience, or can you start out fresh?
Hi RK. See AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
From summer: how much money do they make?
Hi summer. See the AWOL lesson, AN ACTOR'S LIFE....
From Wynika: I found this site; (website address witheld by AWOL) . Is it legit?
Hi Wynika. Do you mean is it a good idea to join? Probably not. Unless you live in LA or NY, you can bet that most of the auditions will be too far away for you to attend. If you live in NY or LA, there are far, far cheaper ways and free ways to get current audition info.
Is it worth the money? Probably not. Despite all the website hype, you are not really apt to get much for your money.
Is it good to have an internet presence? Yes. But if you stop paying them, you will no longer have an internet presence and your website address will be a dead link.
If you join, do not be surprised if you receive all sorts of offers, upgrades and promotions you will be expected to pay lots of money for. It will never end.
From Corey : Hi I am Corey a 33 year old male who would like to do commercials in my local area I have been in several plays, and have done some acting for my local church.I also participated in a contest to be a sports anchor in my area.I did not win the contest, but they did show me for a breif moment for a couple of weeks on television before the contest was over.I was also an extra in Serving Sara several years ago,but they did not show my scene.I currently live in Jacksonville Texas which is 30 minutes from Tyler Texas. My question is what is a good way to get into local commercials in smaller city like the Tyler area?
Hi Corey. Your best chance getting into a local commercial is by securing the services of a talent agent. This probably means in the Dallas/Fort Worth area - which is not too far from you.
Be sure to read the AWOL lessons "I GOTTA GET AN AGENT ! ! !" and WHAT ABOUT SCAMS?.

From salvatore: HI MY NAME IS SALVATORE, I JUST WENT OUT FOR MY FIRST PILOT AUDITION IM 7 AND I HAVE ALLOT OF EXSPERIENCE, ,PLAYS, MODELING, VOICE OVERS, COMMERCIAL ECT.. WELL MY QUESTION IS HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HEAR BACK IT WILL BE ALMOST 2 WEEKS CAN I ASUME I DID NOT GET IT??? IM SOOO EXCITED!!! THANK YOU
Hi salvatore. You are not likely to get a phone call if they are not going to call you back. However, two weeks is not a long time to wait. It could take a month or more. In the mean time, assume you will not get called back and find another audition to go to.
From brianna: I live in arizona, and i have looked on the internet for professional acting classes that i can take for 6 months. But the thing is i cant hardly find any,
well, PROFESSIONAL classes. Is there still a posibility of getting into acting?
Hi brianna. Start here: http://www.durantcom.com/index.html.
From Madilline: I wanna know if i want to becaome an voice actress for disney animation or for any animation. Where should i start. What should i do. Do you have any websites i can go to to practice? Please and THankyou
Hi Madilline. There is much to learn about the voice-over business. It is highly competative and complex. I suggest you get a copy of this book, Talking Funny for Money : An Introduction to the Cartoon/Character/Looping Area of Voice-Overs (Paperback) It is inexpensive and will save you from doing things all the wrong way and wasting a lot of time and money.
From Madilline: How do i devolope voices for charecter animations like disney. What should I do to practice. If i really dont have mch money what can i do. Is their any websites i can go to to help me.Any free downloads of lessons and things like that. Please help me i know you can
Hi Madilline. If you do not have enough money to get an inexpensive book that can help you learn how to get started in the voice-over business, then I suggest you use all your creative energy and talent and find a way to earn some money so you can get the book; or see if your local library has such a book.
Here is an article that can give you some brief info and other resources about the voice-over business:
http://www.backstage.com/bso/career_advice/careers/voiceovers.jsp
And, of course, a Google search of the internet (key words: voice-over, voice-over tips, voice-over lessons, voice-over demos...) will yield a number of sites you can explore.
From Madilline: I am 15 years old.I live in New York. My deepest dream is to be a fulltime entertainer. I want to sing, dance, act, voice act for animation( Disney & anime) and model. I know i have the talent but thats not all you need to make it. You need money and strenght and courage to handle regection you need passion and i have all of that and soo much more. I want to be apart of Disneys legacy someway.I also want to be on braodway But my problem is the timing. I have school and so much to do during the week. I have really no time to myself. i want to know what should i do to practice animation characeter voices. How can i bettrer my voices. What can i do to make it as all i want to be . I know you can help. Ive read all of these lessons on Awol. Im trying to get into a local theater but there is so much for me to do. Please i am really passion about this .do you think i can actually do all of this if not then what you suggest i do. I know its alot i want to do b
ut something deep within knows i can do it. I know i can do it.I also know many people say out of 1000f those who try 2% actually get in. Well i know that im gonna be apart of that 2%.Nothings gonna stop me from reaching there.Im sorry for typing so much but i have one more thing to tell and ask. I dont just want to do this for me. People all over the world are depending on us to entertain them and keep a dream alive. Thats my goal to keep mine and their dreams alive. pease give me as much advice as you can. Thank you
Hi Madilline. You're right, there is much to do - and learn - and it takes a lot of time and effort and energy. If you are determined to become an entertainer and voice-over actor, you will do what you need to do to get started; like all the things discussed in the AWOL lessons and in ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business. Perhaps some of your other extra curricular school activities will have to take second place to your performance skill development. This might help you find time to devote to your deepest dream.
From Hyanglae, jin: Hello I'm looking for begining acting school in London.
Is there have good class or course..??
I'm really want to learn acting .
can you recommend that beginnig acting class or course??
thanks a lot
Hi Hyanglae, jin. Start with the AWOL Search Machine and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
From Lola: i read alot of the questions and answers and i'm wondering about what stuff you said to send in to casting directors. What do you mean by a cd or a video? Should there be a momlouge on the video? Should it be a demo cd? i also want to applaud you for getting back to people so quickly. all my friends who use this site absolutely love it! Thanks!
Hi Lola. See AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business - Chapter 7
From Jannie: Here is a huge tip for people who want to learn to memorize lines. What you need to do is have your lines out infront of you so that you can see them clearly. Then you read your first line outloud. After you are done, then close your eyes and repeat it without looking. Then read the next line outloud. HERES THE CATCH. then you have to close your eyes, repeat the first line you said and then say the second line. after a while all of the lines will just start naturally flowing out of your mouth.
Hi Jannie. Thanks for the tip. we'll post it to our AWOL lesson, LINE! LINE! WHAT'S MY LINE?.
From Soon2BeFamous: I really want to get into acting and i have professional Broadway experience. My parents are hesitant about getting an agent. Can I get jobs and do mailings without and agent? Also, I'm intrested in Disney Channel auditions for Hannah Montana or the Suite Life of Zack and Cody or any other shows or movies. What should i send in?
Hi Soon2BeFamous. I don't believe there are general auditions at this time, but you can send your photo, résumé to:
GOLDWASSER/MELTZER CASTING
TRIBUNE STUDIOS
5800 W. SUNSET BLVD.
BLDG. 11, SUITE 201
HOLLYWOOD, CA 90028
They might take a look at it.
From Alexis: How do you get a job on Disney Channel
Hi Alexis. See above.
From vivian macias: what age can an actor be?
Hi vivian macias. Any age is OK to start.
From iwish: I am in a play, and i need ot do voice exercises, but i don't know what they are because i missed them at rehersal, can you please tell me?
Hi iwish. See the AWOL lesson, GETTING PHYSICAL.
From Keladry: Hi! I gotta say on behalf of all us w/questions that you are amazing for taking the time to answer them. ^^ I got into New World School of the Arts for their musical theatre program, so I'll be going there for college in the fall. Some local theatres are gonna be holding auditions for their 07-08 season soon, but New World doesn't allow students to audition for productions until mid-sophomore year. (sounds like a bad thing, but it's really a very good thing) So my question is this: I still want to do shows over the summer, but would it work against me to go to the 07-08 season auditions knowing I'd only be able to work the summer shows if I get cast? (I want to make this last summer before college a busy one!)If that wouldn't work well, are there any camp-free ways I could acting-wise make the most of my summer? Many thanks in advance!
Hi Keladry. Contact the various production companies and ask if they cast seperately for their summer and regular season shows. Also, there are many theatre groups that only produce summer shows. Check AWOL's Instant Auditions for starters.
From Rachel: Is it true that your contract says you don't have to do anything you feel uncomfortable with, like swearing onscreen?
Hi Rachel. No. But you can try to get such clauses added to a contract.
From from little house on the prairie fan : I was wondering when actress have to be at rehersal or on the set filming and they can not make it to the set or rehersal because they are sick or they have a doctors appoiment do they call the agency and tell then they can not be in today because ...
Hi from little house on the prairie fan. A performer would contact whoever they were told to contact. It would vary depending on the production. Having a doctor's appointment is not usually a good excuse unless it is an emergency. It is usually best to reschedule the doctor's appointment.
From addy: Does acting include traveling like in tours to do performances?
Hi addy. It would if you got a job performing in a touring show.
From Karume.: I am Young Congolese amateur actor of 27 years old, but I want to do professional acting in the American Broadway shows in New York and then in Hollywood movies. I know that I have the talent, because I have been acting since I was a child, I also have a good sense of creative story writing.
My question is, do you think I can make it? To be a great foreign actor from Africa in the U.S.A.? Since, I was a teenage boy, my dream was to become a great Broadway and Hollywood foreign superstar. Can I make it? If yes, What and how can I do it?
Hi Karume.. Somebody has to make it. Might as well be you - if you are willing to work hard, study and perform every opportunity you get. See the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage.
From Kate: Hi, I've looked everywhere for tips on memorizing lines, and this seems the best site. The technique that works for me the best is PRACTICING.
I'm 13 and have 175 lines in this play thats really dramatic. I'm on stage the whole play and with everyone else changing, I memorize whats going to happen in that scene. (ex. What are they going to talk to me about? Are they trying to hurt me? Should I act scared, or angry?) This helps me a lot since each character comes and talks to me for a different reason.
And, also, when you read over the script and practice on stage, it's easier to know where each line goes.
Hi Kate. Good suggestions. We'll post your message to our page re: memorizing lines, LINE! LINE! WHAT'S MY LINE?.
From Brianna: my goal in life is to be an actress, its been my goal since i was seven.
I know acting cost alot of money, but I was just wondering what the average would be/or required tasks for acting.
Hi Brianna. Acting does not cost a lot of money. For info about the acting business, see the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business
From Sarah: I am taking a Stage Combat course and was wondering if there are any comprehensive or compiled lists of plays with combat scenes in them? Thanks!!!
Hi Sarah. Just about every Shakespeare play has some stage combat. Also, try the stage combat sites. Perhaps someone specializing in stage combat has compiled such info. If not, then I guess it will be up to you.
From hayley: Hi... i was wondering if you could help me find SINGING auditions..im also interested in acting...but mostling singing..i would love to have or be on a show like Hannah Montana..... i live in VA...fredericksburg VA...so plaese help me!!!!!! thank you!!
Hi hayley. Regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Jessie: I wear glasses, and there's absolutely no possibility of my ever wearing contacts. Does that mean acting is out for me? I mean, I can still see without them, just not details.
Hi Jessie. Good news! You can still be an actor.
From jake: how much do actors make per year
Hi jake. See the AWOL lesson, AN ACTOR'S LIFE...
From iwish: ok, so i live in a small town in ontario, near toronto, and buffalo. I am really interested in becoming an actress for screen. I am 15 years old, and i don't have an agent at the moment. I don't know where to look for open auditions, are there any site is could try that would have some stuff in toronto or buffalo? I ahve looked at the auditions on your site, but none of them apply to me, so i was hopeing maybe you could tell me of some other sites i could try, please
thank-you
Hi iwish. Try this site, http://www.pact.ca/who.cfm.
From stevie: hi. I live in a small town with no money to have acting lessons, but i really want to become an actress. what should i do?
Hi stevie. See the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From DramaKing: Hi. I sent a head shot and Resume to Abrams Artists Agency. I know that they have a youth department so i thought that would be good. I also sent a cover letter. I dont know if that was needed though.??. But the problem for me is that I live in Maine which pretty far from NYC which is where Abrams is located. Actually its far from anything exciting. Would boston be better? Can you give me some advice? Im 15 and would love to be on television. Do you post auditions for teens? or just disney channel? cuz it seems like theres alot of disney stuff being menitioned on this site. Thanks. I know this asking alot of you and i really do appreciate it.
Hi DramaKing. Boston is a bit closer. However, I suggest you spend the next 3 or 4 years developing your acting, singing, dancing and other performance skills. Get parts in as many local productions as you can. For more about how to prepare yourself for a professional career, see the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
Youo might consider attending a professional training program either in college or at a conservatory. Eventually, you will be ready to hit the big time, then a move to NY or LA is in order. But don't leave until you are ready to compete in those intense, professional markets.
From Addie R: I have always wanted to be an actress on disney channel. How can I become an actress or a special guest on disney channels " Hannah Montanna"?
Hi Addie R. Open calls for a number of Disney Channel shows, including Hannah Montanna, are over. However, you can always send your info and maybe get lucky on their next production of whatever. Contact Disney Channel and inquire about who to send your info to. A high-quality CD or video of samples of your work would be good to send with a résumé. Don't expect to get them returned to you.

Hi haley. Too late.

Hi kitkat. Cool Bill and Associates.
From April: what does it take to become an actor

From Allyssa: Hi um i live in NY and um i was wondering how can i live in Ny and stay in NY forever without leaving and still be an actor
Hi Allyssa. Develop the skills necessary for actors to earn a living in live theatre, voice-overs and commercials (dance, singing, acting, voice-over techniques, commercial acting techniques.)
From Laura: I'm 17 years old (almost 18 actually) and I've participated in theater at my school for many years. I've always had an interest in taking up acting professionally and going to auditions. But if I go to an audition, will the people in charge of casting not consider me because I haven't taken any acting classes? Also I know everyone has asked about disney channel, so I have to ask, are they having any open calls for any of their shows? Thanks a bunchh!
Hi Laura. Open calls for a number of Disney Channel shows are over. However, you can always send your info and maybe get lucky on their next production of whatever. They are interested in what you can do - not where you got some training.
From kim: i am 14 and all my life I have wanted to become an actress. my mom doesn't think that it is the best career for me. what should I do?
Hi kim. Here are a few strategies that can help:
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS remain calm, respectful and rational. You cannot expect your parents to change their attitudes overnight. Angry outbursts as a reaction to your disappointment will only set them more firmly against the whole idea. Building support from reluctant parents is complex and must be approached objectively and calmly.
Tantrums, shouting matches, defiance, anger and whining are not acceptable behaviors for a professional actor. Show your parents you are mature, responsible, trustworthy, and can handle disappointment gracefully, like a pro. These are important traits for an actor to possess.
Negotiations frequently involve setbacks. How you handle those setbacks is an important part of continued success. Keep in mind that your ultimate goal, your long-term goal, is to help your parents feel comfortable, be accepting and be supportive of your desire and efforts to study and do acting.
You need your parents on your side. This is new for them. Work on the idea slowly. Don't shove it at them all at once. It could take months or a year or more to make headway. Success takes its own time. Those who are prepared and ready recognize it when it arrives. Don't rush blindly toward some imagined wisp of stardom. Prepare yourself for success.
In the mean time, demonstrate your interest in acting by:
* Attending local plays - not just movies.
* Find out about your local community theatres and subscribe to their newsletters.
* Read lots and lots of books about acting so you can learn something about acting and the business of acting, even if you cannot attend classes. You can find acting books in the library or you can purchase some through AWOL's Book Search.
* Read the FREE Acting Lessons on the AWOL homepage.
* Take any performance skill classes you can in and outside of school. This includes acting, dance, singing, voice, music, even such things as forensics, juggling, martial arts...These are very valuable skills for an actor to have. You never know what you will called upon to do for a role. The more skills you are competent in, the more employable you are - and better able to pay the monthly bills when you are on your own as a struggling actor in NY or LA.
They will still be making movies and theatre productions when you are prepared and ready - and when you have your parents on your side.
From Richard: What is a good cover letter?
Hi Richard. See our info re: cover letters in AWOL's lesson "I GOTTA GET AN AGENT ! ! !".
From Zach: Will getting into the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television greatly affect my chance of "making it" in Hollywood?
Hi Zach. Yes.
From kevin: How can I memorize all my lines?
Hi kevin. See the AWOL lesson LINE! LINE! WHAT'S MY LINE?.
From michelle: Hi. I just want to know if its worth it to pay $2600 for about 20 weeks for a modeling/acting school to help me with my career? I have already read what about scams and I'm still confused. Can you help me with that? Thanks.
Hi michelle. Yes, I can help. It will not help you with your career. Save your money. What will help you? See the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Scott: I really love the whole concept of acting. I always dream of being an actor, i can always see myself in movies, but theres one problem, when it comes to reading scripts i just don't put Enthusiasm into it. People always tell me i can act but when i am reading from a script i just go dull. I will do anything to be an actor, so can you give me any adivice to help me.
Hi Scott. Practise reading scripts. Read 50 or so scripts - with feeling. That ought to do it.
From fan of samantha micelli : i was wondering do actress choose there own customes, also how do actress change costume so fast instead of asking here where can i find questions and answers to all of my acting questions also when actress are not on scene and are waiting for there scene what do they do and where are they
Hi fan of samantha micelli . If a quick change is required; and for many professional productions; there is a "dresser" back stage to assist the actors. Sometimes special clothes are designed for quick changes. When not needed for a scene, actors are somewhere near by, doing whatever. If they are done and no longer needed, they might stick around to wait for friends, or they might be on their way home, or on their way to a party.
From ella: What kind of people do casting people and agents like? And how would an agent or casting director be able to tell that you can make them a lot of money? I have just seen so many shows and movies where the acting is horriable, and I think why would they hire these horriable actors. I just dont get why they would hire some one who isnt so good rather than someone that is better. I always think how come tons of bad actors get to be in shows or movies and I probable never will? ;(
Hi ella. You probably never will because you probably will stop trying.
From Paris: when i do make a CD or a dvd or anything to the disney channel casting group up above. what address do i send it to??
Hi Paris. It is now too late to send to the Disney Channel auditions. We received word today from the Disney people that the auditions are closed.
From Linda: where can i write to elaine saussotte and also if you want costume from tv show where can i get them and if i can t can i get elaine saussotte to make them for me cause their are costume that i really like to have please reply
Hi Linda. Perhaps you missed it. We are an acting site. Not a costume site.
From *Jazzy*: Does it matter how much i send to Disney Channel?
Hi *Jazzy*. It is now too late to send to the Disney Channel auditions. We received word today from the Disney people that the auditions are closed.
From clinton: how to be chosen to act on the suite life of zack and cody
Hi clinton. They are looking for TEEN BOYS AND GIRLS -
Ages 12-17, all ethnicities. They are seeking teenaged actors who also might sing and dance. They are seeking strong, appealing comic actors with star qualities. They are seeking talent of all ethnicities; e.g., African American, Hispanic, Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Caucasian, and others.
If that's you, then send in your stuff.
From Hampton: I want to be an actress but I dont have much of a resume. I dont have an agent and I dont live in a huge city, so I dont know if I have a chance. I really want to do something like Disney but I don't know how. Please help me!!
Hi Hampton. Help is on the way! See the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From kengi: can u suggest any good upbeat and slow song to sing for a Disney channel audition
Hi kengi. Forever Young - Joan Baez version.
From Zack: I have developed an interest in acting, and I want to know if you have any advice. Where do I go from here? I read your free lessons, but should I go to an acting school? Also, I might be getting into UCLA, and I have heard that they have a very good school of acting. Would it be worth my time to enroll in this class?
I have started lifting weights, and I was wondering if building a body can limit you in the acting business, or if it is a good thing. I have a problem with stage fright. I get up in front of more than three or four people, and I freeze. Any suggestions?
Does martial arts help you get parts?
Hi Zack. Did you also read ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business?
It would be worth enrolling in UCLA's acting program. There is an audition to get in. Better start practisin'. http://www.tft.ucla.edu/dot_ba/index.cfm?action=faq
If martial arts skills are required for a role, you will have the skills. It is a good idea to develop a variety of skills aside from performance skills.
Which ones? Whatever interests you. Scuba diving if you like. Snow boarding. Harmonica playing. Holding your breath for long periods of time. Whatever. You never know what special skills a role might call for.
Re: the stage fright. I suggest you get up infront of more than four people as often as possible. Eventually, you will get used to it.
From Hadley: *sigh* I'm sure I do. Sorry again.
From Michael : Do you know of anywhere on the net where current broadway directors/casting directors talk about what they are looking for for specific shows? For example, I recently went to a Telsey + Company audition in Orlando where they were seeking immediate/future replacements for 5 shows (Rent, Wicked, Hairspray, The Color Purple, and Tarzan.) Hope this is clear.
Hi Michael . Wouldn't it be nice if things worked that easily. They don't. So you will have to do a little work yourself. A good place to start is by becoming familiar with the productions. Search the internet to get some cast and background info. You can also search for reviews and other web writings about the various productions. If you check out the numerous auditions we post on AWOL's Instant Auditions page, you will notice many of them provide a brief description of what the casting people are seeking.
From raven y.: how much would it be if you asked me to come over to audition, how much would it cost
Hi raven y. Nothing, we don't hold auditions.
From raven y.: hi, i was wondering, if you live in new zealand somewhere and lets just say i posted a picture of me to los angelas for to see if i could get an audition over there, and if i did and you ask me to come over so you could see me in person, what if i don't have my pass port and don't have enough money to go over there
Hi raven y. Then you would not get the audition.
From kengi: 1)hi, i was wonderin... do u continuosly call and send ur stuff in to them?
2) after you know all the casting directors for all the disney shows, get their address and send stuff into them too?
Hi kengi. Do not continuously call. I think it would be a good idea if you read through our info in AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business - before you make a nuisance of yourself.
From tianna: Ummm is it to late to send it in my information i just finished up
Hi tianna. Does the info do you any good if you leave it laying around your house?
From ashley: How do actors and actresses get a agent? how do we actors and actresses get into acting auditions?? what is acting emotions all about and how do you strive for the learning about them with out cutting your budget? how many acting schools are their that we can get to with a good cost? how many actors and actresses do we have in the united states? were do we find acting auditions without singing and dancing?
Hi ashley. We don't really want to rewrite all our lessons pages and guide book, so to find the answers to all your questions (and a lot of questions you haven't thought of yet, see the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
From Robert: I am a sixteen year old boy, and I am just starting to get interested in acting. I am also writing many screenplays. What would you recommend as my next move? I have read all of your AWOL links, and they contained a lot of information. However, I live in a theater-challenged area. Should I devote my time to writing, or should I find out if there are any theater groups around here?
Another question about screenplays. Do writers ever star in their own movies? Thanks.
Hi Robert. Few writers star in their own movies. I think you should search for theatre groups, start your own group and make your own films. Post them to YouTube.
From Bubbles: How can you convincingly perform dying, or being dead onstage?
Hi Bubbles. The dead on stage part is easy. Just don't move. The audience will get the idea. The performing dying is not much different than any other acting. For some basic lessons, see the AWOL lessons,

GETTING PHYSICAL
From peter.a: i am 16 going 17.i am a drop out . i kind of got the acting bug and it messed me up thoroughly;from a top ranking school to a nobody.i am looking for anyone out there who can take me and sponsor me to a drama school aven though i have not finished school.that is my only dying wish.i am from kenya.thanks.
Hi peter.a. Are you planning on dying any time soon?
From Laura: hi, im 14 and have become interested in acting in the last year, ive read all your lessons and they have really helped me understand acting more thanks! but my mam really doesnt help, like many others have probably heard she's always saying 'be realistic' or 'stop dreaming laura your being stupid' ect. at one point i did stop to think, 'am i being stupid' so i looked into it and after reading your lessons i realised im not.
because im from a small town she says 'how many people from here do you know who are famous' so i thought, well have any of them actually tried? probably not. so i thought of leaving school at 16 (im from engand by the way) and moving to larger town or city, like london, then once i have enough money move to l.a. but im to scared to tell her this because shes always wanted me to go to collage, and as much as i want to keep her happy theres really nothing else i want to do other than acting.
And im not really that experienced, im taking
a drama course at school, and have been in a few small plays, but thats it. and as i have an accent she said she would let me have elocution lessons, but thats only because she thinks it nice when people talk nice, not because i want to act. can you help me? id really appreciate it.
Hi Laura. I suggest you stay in England for awhile and study acting as part of your college studies. There are many excellent actor training programs in England and many opportunities to develop performance skills and get professional experience.
After you have seriously studied acting in England and developed a solid body of professional work (perhaps in London?) you can rationally entertain the notion of coming to LA. to further your professional ambitions.
From Hadley: I'm not trying to be rude or unappreciative of your advice in any way, and I'm sorry if it seems like it, but just 3 things: I. Hate. High School Musical. 3 more things: With. A. Passion. If it were anything else, I would go in enthusiastically, but never High School Musical. I'd never be in it even if it would turn me into a household name. I'll be turned into a household name another way, thank you very much. Again, sorry if it seems I'm being rude, and I really do appreciate the advice you've given me. Thank you.
Hi Hadley. You have much to learn, grasshopper.
From bruce: If they chose someone to audition for disney that lives far from LA, would they fly them out, or would you have to fly yourself out?
Hi bruce. There might be several exchanges of additional info, picture, tapes, whatever. Eventually, if their interest stays high, they will fly you out. After all, if you turn out to be the next Disney Channel sensation, their expenses to fly you out to LA are pretty small compared to their financial gain from your success.
From Lavender: Do you know where I can find out the deadline date to submit my resume to Disney? I just want to know how much time I have left. And I also want to know when the disney people will be finished looking over everybodys resumes and will have the list of people they want to audition? I just dont want to be waiting around feeling anxious all the time, wondering if i get to audition or not. I just want something to go by. Thank you. This site is great!!!
Hi Lavender. I suggest you send it ASAP. Don't delay. Assume you have no time left. I have no idea when they will be contacting people.
We just posted the info, we are not with GOLDWASSER/MELTZER CASTING.
Do not expect a call. Most people who send in their audition material will not get a call. This is true of all professional auditions. Professional actors do not wait around feeling anxious. They find another audition and go to it. And then another, and another and another...Eventually, someone will call. This process might take a few months - or years.
From Hadley: Tee hee. Hi. Andrew-Lloyd-Webber-Obsessed-Maniac here. Again. More likely than not, (unless I think of some other spontaneous question to ask), this is my last one. Two, actually.
1) Those Disney Channel auditions. Is it possible to audition for ONLY Hannah Montana? Because I love that show, Suite Life is OK but it bugs me a bit, That's So Raven bugs me even more, and if I got into something like High School Musical, *gag*, I'd DIE. (Sorry. Being picky. I just despise High School Musical.)
2) I live in Indiana. Any good auditions for people around Fort Wayne?
Thanks again, and the Andrew-Lloyd-Weber-Obsessed-Maniac is finally shutting up! (Until further notice.)
Hi Hadley. Regarding Indiana auditions: Regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
Actually, if they do call (see above response) and they want to see you for High School Musical, you should go and be extremely enthusiastic about it because that would probably be the only chance you would get at being on a Disney channel show and it would be very foolish to be picky.
From sarah rose.: I am a 13 year old girl and would love to be an actress. I was wondering how to build a resume. i have taking acting/improv classes for almost 3 years and preformed in many plays and improv performances. I was a model for about a year or so when i was younger. I was thinking of trying to do commercials and stuff like that for starters. You still need a resume for that right? Would my acting experience so far be enough to be considered for a role in a commercial? Or even a small part in a movie with only a few lines? Thank you very much.
Hi sarah rose.. It is good for starters. To learn how to do a résumé, see the résumé info in AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business
From Shirley: How can I find auditions for Disney Channel's Cory In the House,Hannah Montana,The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,or That's So Raven?
Hi Shirley. Did you happen to notice the Disney channel audition info posted at several places on this page and at the top of the ASK AWOL a QUESTION page?
From Lana: Hi,
I filmed a movie and have acted in two short films in a few acting schools. Can I put these on my resume?
Hi Lana. Yes.
From JAMIE.: I was just wondering how much acting experience you need to have a good acting resume. I have been in two plays. I molded for one year. took about 2 and a half years of acting and improv classes. And have been in 4 improv performances. I have also taken guitar lessons for 4 years. would that be ok to put on a resume. and would that even be enough experience for a good resume?
Hi JAMIE.. You "molded" for a year? Your experience is minimal; good for starters - but you have a long way to go. The guitar playing should go in a section called "Other Skills".
From Matilda : where do all the shows on disney channel get filmed at? Are almost all the shows filmed in hollywood? Because if they are mostly filmed in Hollywood, why would they choose a kid that doesnt live in hollywood to be in their new shows. Like, for instance, if they choose someone that lives in Northern California to be in their new "hit" disney show wouldnt they want them to move to Los Angelas, because it is too risky for them to fly out all of the time to film. So would the kid and their whole family have to be willing to move to Los Angelas? Sorry if my question is a little confusing. thank you.
Hi Matilda . LA is where most of the Disney channel shows get filmed. If they choose someone from outside of the LA area, the actor is expected to move to LA. This is usually not a problem because the actor is destined to make a lot of money and attain some level of fame. Usually the actor's parents are all for it and goes out there too.
From Hortencia: Hello,
I am not sure how long this service of yours has been going on, but I was curious about a certain thing. I dont know exactly how to ask it but I will give it a shot:
What sort of success have people had with sending resumes to the addresses you provide? Have people wrote to you informing you of their success? I am just curious if anyone through your service has had any success stories?
Also: If anyone were to get an audition, at the end, is it a sort of thing where they need to pay any money? I have dealt with things in the past that said they were associated somehow with disney, and it ended up being some kind of money related scam. The reason I ask these questions is because I read someone elses question about how many people get calls back, and it sparked my interest. Thanks, Hortencia.
Hi Hortencia. We have no idea how many people who see an audition posted on our site go to the audition and get a part. They don't write us to let us know. We don't run the auditons. We only post the info.
Re: the Disney auditions, GOLDWASSER/MELTZER CASTING directly involved in the casting. They won't ask you for any money to audition. Anyone who does is a scammer.
From jenny: What is a union.. i saw it says that you don't need to be in a union but i was still wondering
Hi jenny. See the AWOL info pages,
ACTORS'
EQUITY
ASSOCIATION
(AEA)
The Stage Actors' Union
AFTRA
and
SAG
The Movie, TV Actors' Unions
From Hadley: I'm ba-ak! The Andrew Lloyd Webber obsessed MANIAC! Anyhoo, how can I find movie auditions? Like, non-union movies that'll still be a big deal. I'm probably bothering you with my desire to skip all the important stuff between starting out and professional, but I just want to know. Because I'm weird. And proud of it. I'll shut up now. Thanks again!
Hi Hadley. Regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From jami: Ji I'm jami and say the disney channel auditions, well my question is long and i wanted to know if it was to late to turn in any c.ds or tapes...I can sing pretty well and i can't make up dances on spot but if u show me the steps i get it pretty fast.....I have a little excerpt from Hannah Montana and I'v been studying the lines, do u think they'll mind if i act out the little excerpt. One more question ummmm how would you go about making a audition c.d without a video camera.
Hi jami. You can still send in your audition materials. Sure, act out your excerpt. No video camera? Try using the video feature on most cell phones. Or a web cam if your computer is so equiped.
From kayla: hi I'm 13 turning 14 I'm not an experienced actress i jus like to act but never did any musicals or theatre or anything along those lines..I don't have an agent.. will the people casting still look at my resume and what would i put on my resume if I have absolutley no expeience??
Hi kayla. I suggest you write a nice letter telling them about why you think they should see you. It would be a really good idea if you send a video of you performing something too. They have to have something to go on.
From maddie: what's the deadline because i still haven't sent in a tape yet
Hi maddie. Better send your stuff in real soon. They won't wait forever.
From : HEY, im audtioning for a musical. im the person who has to sing one accapella song. im have trouble finding a good song. i want a song thats funny that i can do a lot of acting with and make them laugh. do have any suggestions?? thankss. oh and please write back asap. audtions are soon!
Hi . I have a suggestion, don't do a funny song that you can do a lot of acting with and make them laugh. I suggest you find a song similar to the types of songs in the musical, pick one that is not funny and sing your little, pea-pickin' heart out. The acting you want to do is with your voice. If you want an example of what I mean by this, listen to "Memory" from CATS, sung by Betty Buckley. Compare that to the rendition sung be Barbara Streisand. You can find samples at the Apple Music Store.
You will notice a big difference between the two interpretations. Streisand is singing the song for a concert piece. Buckley is vocally acting the song for the musical. You want to achieve something akin to Buckley's rendition - but not with Memory, with your own chosen song. Memory is too complex a song for you to do well.
From Aisha: I would reaaly love to start acting and i just love Disney Channel, but it sees like all the disney channel auditions are in California. I live in Atlanta. Are there any Casting Calls or auditions in Atlanta?
Hi Aisha. There are many auditions in the Atlanta area. Go to the AWOL Instant Auditions page (http://www.redbirdstudio.com/AWOL/instantauds.html) and look for these links on the right hand column:
138 Georgia: GMT Productions - Touring Theatre, all states east of the Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas
139 Georgia, Dunwoody: Stage Door Players
140 Georgia, North Fulton: Georgia Ensemble Theatre
141 Georgia, Columbus: Springer Opera House
142 Georgia: Greater Atlanta Auditions
143 Georgia, Columbus: The Springer Opera House
144 Georgia: Atlanta: Alliance Theatre Auditions
Re: Disney channel audition info, see the Disney Channel audition info we have posted at the top of the Instant Auditions page. You can send info to them even if there are no Atlanta auditions scheduled. If they are interested in seeing you, they will call.
From Gianni B.: Hi i was wondering today is January 2, 2007 is it too late to send in a tape?
And im 15 but 6 feet tall is that to tall for tv? And do you have to sing i can dance and learn the steps very quickly and can act preety good but had no expierience will that hurt my chances?
And last question the tribune studios suite 201 on sunset, is that for all disney shows or just for Hannah Montana?
Hi Gianni B.. It is not too late. This is what they say they are seeking:
TEEN BOYS AND GIRLS -
Ages 12-17, all ethnicities. We are seeking teenaged actors who also might sing and dance. We are seeking strong, appealing comic actors with star quality for future projects to be produced for Disney Channel.
Producers for Disney Channel are committed to representing talent of all ethnicities in their programming; therefore, please submit talent of ANY AND ALL ETHNICITIES; e.g., African American, Hispanic, Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Caucasian, and others.
I don't see a height requirement. You might not have noticed that the acting on most of the Disney Channel shows are not exactly Oscar material. However, experience would be helpful from the standpoint of appearing confident and at ease in performance. If you can convincingly appear that way on a video you might send, then don't worry about it.
From daniel: i was curious if you knew when the disney casting people would choose the people who sent in resumes. also, if you had any idea how many people they will choose to come in and audition. like since there is tones of people sending in resumes, do you think they will choose maybe 100 people of maybe just 10 people. i just want to know what my chances are of getting picked. And when are they going to choose people? thanks a lot.
Hi daniel. Since we do not run the auditions - only inform you about the fact they exist - we have no idea about any of the callback details.
From kengi: if u've called the # but left a message and said thankyou and asked if there are any open auditions what do i do next? i even tried to go to Disney auditions on this site but they are only 'disneyland, Disney world' and other disney Resorts. do i call them occasionally and try to reach someone and ask them??
Hi kengi. You study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business. We already spent a lot of time writing about the casting process and what actors should do. Now you have to do your part and read the Guide.
From *Jazzy*: What if i don't want to wait for an agent?
Hi *Jazzy*. Study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business. It has a lot about the casting process and what actors should do if they do not have an agent.
From x-denise-x: heya !
i really would like to become an actress but my mum and dad said they think I'm to shy. They both said that they would back up my answer 100% but there are no acting schools around that my mum and dad could afford to get me in to. I don't know if it is just a phase or if it is what I really want to do, I see people on TV and I think "that could be me if I didn't live in Scotland!" Do you have to live in America to become famous ? please give me some advice !!!!
Hi x-denise-x. Before you fret about not becoming famous, I think it is a good idea to get some acting experience. I suggest you look for local audition opportunities to get you started. It is a good way to help determine if acting is just a phase you are going through. One way to get started - even if you have no experiece is through local plays. To get get yourself started, study the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage.
From Dennis: I have an acting audition tape and want to send it to Disney or Disney Channel, what is the address so i can send it?
Hi Dennis. We have it posted several places on this page.
From *Jazzy*: I absolutely love acting. and i want a career in it. and along with acting i love to sing, and give me some steps and i can dance too. i have read everything on this page. just about. i live in warner robins georgia. and i cant seem to find any auditions for anything. ill take anything. but i absolutely love disney channel. i really need your help. do you think you know anywhere in warner robins georgia or close to it that i can go to audition for a spot on disney channel?
Hi *Jazzy*. You are only about 1 1/2 hours from Atlanta. There are many auditions in the Atlanta area and other parts of the state. Go to the AWOL Instant Auditions page (http://www.redbirdstudio.com/AWOL/instantauds.html) and look for these links on the right hand column:

Re: Disney channel audition info, see the Disney Channel audition info we have posted at the top of the Instant Auditions page.
From alasia: 1) ive called the number u gave me (CAROL GOLDWASSER/MELTZER ive sent my stuff in--Waiting for them to call me back also-- . I'm with an agency now, they've helped alot of people, should i wait for them to call me with an audition?? (my agency)if not how else do i find auditions??--besides the 'find auditions' on this site
2) i,ve left a message for different casting directors, saying thankyou for the opportunity to send my info. i asked where their next open auditions will b held. i left my contact number, should i expect to b called back to b informed where the next auditions will b held??
Hi alasia. 1) Don't wait for your agent to call you. You have to do most of the audition finding even with an agent. Seems odd, but that's the way it is. Remember, your agent is only earning 10 or 15% of your earning when you work. They also do the negotiating and handle the contracts and all that important stuff - for 10 or 15% of your actor income. Do not expect them to do 100% of the audition searching. Maybe 10%. The other 90% is up to you.
To get a better idea of what the agent/actor relationship is really all about see the agent info in ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
A thank you call is nice, but CDs do not often hold open auditions. Do not expect a CD to call you back unless they want to see you, see you again or have you send more info. There are just too many people calling and sending them info. It would take too much time to give a call to everyone. It is your job to maintain the contact.
From heather: hello,
I was wondering if Disney channel are looking for main characters for their shows or if they are just looking for people for just a couple of scenes? Like, when they pick the kids for the auditions and the kids get the roles, are they going to be a regualar disney channel actress or actor or just an actress/actor for maybe a few scenes? Thank you very much.
Hi heather. The extras and under-fives are hired locally in LA, not through a nationwide talent search. They are seeking the next Miley Cyrus type and other leads types.
From Hadley: Hi. I am theatre and movie OBSESSED and want to start an acting career, probably in theatre. I have 2 questions. 1) If I want to audition for a show, say... Phantom of the Opera, (@-->-->--), would I have to be in a Union or not?
2) I' m 13. How old would I have to be to audition for something like Phantom of the Opera?
Thanks for your help!
Hi Hadley. You do not have to be in the union to audition. There are some auditions that are only open to union members and some auditions will see union members first, but it is possible to audition if you are not in the union. You better be one-heck-of-an actress and singer, though.
Re: your second question - are there teenagers in the cast? If not, you will not be able to audition.
From Gohar: Hi, I'm a 17 year old HS grad studying at University.,I have plenty of training and background in the field of acting or anything.I'm ready to everything to make my greatest dream of becoming a celebrity come true. I really believe I have what it takes and can make it big. I know it will take much time, effort, hard work, luck, yadda-yadda but I know I can do it. "Anyhoo, I wish I was in LA or New York or someplace where all the action is. If someone would just give me a chance, I have faith that I can pull it off. I just need someone to give me a start. I will do anything and everything possible and impossible to make my dream a reality." "Ple-e-e-e-ase help. You won't be sorry. Thanks for your time. I will be looking forward to your reply.
Cordially,
Gohar
Hi Gohar. Hmmmmmmm. Sounds familiar. Where have I seen this question before? Oh yes, it is in the introduction to our guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business - though you changed a few words. Well, since you read that far, you might as well read the rest.
From Gohar: Hellooo! It's again me Gohar.Iwanted to know if it's possible to sell your script with the arrangement that you'll act the leading role.(I'm good at writing and have some scripts).as far as I know Ben Affleck and Mett Daimon became famous this way.
Thanks.I'm looking forward to hearing from You.
Hi Gohar. Of course you can. but first you have to have a good script - you know, something someone would be willing to buy. Then you have to convince a producer to buy it under your conditions. That's all. Good luck. I suggest you start with writing lessons.
From Gohar: Helloooooo. I have one more question.I've just seen on your site hundreds of audition sites. As I live outside the USA I can't be present at the auditions but some of them ask first to send a resume and headshot. So may I send them these things and if they ask me to go to them to audition I'll leave Armenia for the USA.Please advise if it's possible or not.I'll be looking forward to your reply.
Hi Gohar. Sure you can send them. But if they ask to see you, make sure you ask your mother if it is OK to go. A written note from your mother is a good thing to get too. G'luck. See you in Hollywood.
BTW. How's Anahit?
From karen: were do you need to go to be a disney channel actrres like to what place?
Hi karen. You need look at the info re: Disney Channel auditions we have posted in several locations in this Q&A.
From karen: hi i wanted to ask were do you send like the dvds for auditions for disney channel?
Hi karen. You send them to the place specified in the Disney Channel auditions we have posted in several locations in this Q&A.
From K-la: What should be in an cd or dvd that is sent to an agent or casting director?
Hi K-la. See the info re: what to send to an agent or CD that we have posted in AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business
From Fantasy: I was just wondering, how do they do nude scenes? I mean, are the actors actually naked or what? (Sorry, I know this is a little awkward.)
Hi Fantasy. Sometimes they are naked. Sometimes the naked actor you see on stage is a look-alike who stands in for the real actor for the nude scene (they do tricks to conceal the stand-in's identity like not clearly showing the actor's face.) Sometimes, through the use of clever costuming, lighting and camera angles, they make it look like the actor is naked even though they are not.
From Stephanie: Hi, i'm 13 yrs old and i've dreamt of becoming an actress for ever. I just don't know where to go to audition and stuff and I don't live in the US which I always thought that you should always live there to becoming actress/actor or singer but my parents don't want to move obviously!! So what can I do if I don't want to wait until i'm 18 to become an actress and where would I go if I live in Canada to audition? Please help me! Acting has always been my dream and I don't want to change that.
Thank you so much for your time! Happy New Year!
-Stephanie
Hi Stephanie. Things work pretty much the same in Canada as in the States, except Toronto and Vancouver are the Canadian hot spots for film. There are lots of stage perfomance and training opportunities in Canada, you just have to find them. See the AWOL lesson, WHAT EVERY ACTOR NEEDS TO KNOW, to learn how to get started.
Eventually, after you have some training and experience, you might consider moving to the States. That will be after a few years of hard work in Canada.
The wait should not be problem since becoming an actress is your life-long dream. You will want to prepare yourself properly so you will have your best chance to realize your dream.
From Bryant : I want to know all of Disney Chanell auditons for television shows I heard something about Hannah Montana when I called.
Hi Bryant . See the Disney Channel auditions info we have posted in several locations in this Q&A.
From shauna kay : for a teen how can they write a story and then produce it because u have no money
Hi shauna kay . The writing part does not cost any money. Just a writing device and some paper. The production part is likely to cost some money. If you write a story that involves lots of actors, sets, costumes and lighting requirements, it will cost money to provide these requirements. If you write a story that does not require lots of such requirements, then your story will be a lot cheaper to produce.
From myriam: i always see auditions for films but they are not always what im looking for.. how do i find auditions for movies that are going to be a bigger success like pursuit of happyness or any other big movies that come out?
Hi myriam. you are not likely to find auditions for the top roles in such films because the main roles are usually pre-cast in the early development stage or cast via agent contacts. So if you want to get a shot at the big movies, you will likely need decent agent representation - and a lot of other stuff too. To find out more about how you can get a chance, see AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
From myriam: What's a union? Are they good, or bad because I noticed most auditions are non-union only?
Hi myriam. See the section re: unions in AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business
From SImon Sandh: if i send an audition tape to Goldwasser/Meltzer Casting Tribune Studios 5800 W. Sunset Blvd. Bldg. 11, Suite 201 Hollywood, CA 90028 and they like me will i have to pay them anything???(if i get a part i a show)
Hi SImon Sandh. No. They are casting directors, not agents. See the info about casting directors and agents in AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
From tokio: hi, im audtioning for a musical. they said to have one acapella song prepared. i know all the songs to the musical. should i sing a song from the musical or pick another? k thNKS byee
Hi tokio. I don't know.some auditors like to hear songs from the show being produced, some do not. If it is possible to call and ask, do so. If not, then assume if they did not want a song from the show, they would have said so in the audition notice.
From Gohar: Helloooo!I'm Gohar . I've began my acting career and have some acting experience. I'm not still in Hollywood and I'm going to move there soon. I'd like to know how important appearance is for an actress in Hollywood. It's not as if I were ugly but I'm a bit short (158 cm). So will it be a problem for me there?
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Truly, Gohar
P.S.This site is the most useful I've found on acting .Thanks a lot.
Hi Gohar. Short is no problem. There are lots of 5 foot 2 inch actresses in Hollywood. There are lots of short actors too.
From Malaysia: How can i get a role in the hit TV series Hannah Montana? I cant find any casting calls.
Hi Malaysia. Do you mean nowhere other than several places on this page?
From Bianca: I heard that Disney was looking for new faces to act on Hannah Montana and other shows. I heard they were coming to Houston, Texas, is this true, and if it is true, then when are they coming. I also wanted to ask how come a lot of auditions for teens don't come to Houston.
Hi Bianca. I guess you will have to ask them yourself - the contact phone number is listed in several places on this page.
From Anonymous: How do you get into a commercial?
Hi Anonymous. You find an audition, attend it, and hope you get a part. Most commercials are cast by casting directors contacting agents and selecting actors from their own files. To find out how to find agents and casting director info, see AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
From Denise: How do you get into a Disney Channel Movie?
Hi Denise. You look for the audition info posted at several places on this page.
From lalala : hi, did you hear of any kids who sent their tapes(disney audtions) in that got called back or considered??? thankss byee
Hi lalala. The producers do not inform me of their callback results.
From Lauren: HI! I was just wondering about the disney audition info. I don't live in LA so I would have to send them somthing but I don't know what do put into my dvd or resume. I can act, sing and dance, but I wouldn't know how to display that.
Hi Lauren. See the photo and résumé info in AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
From Lauren: HI. It's december. Do you think it's too late to send my infor to the Disney Auditions?
Hi Lauren. Nope.
From Heather: Hi, I was wondering if you knew when the last day was to submit your resumes into Disney channel for their auditions? And do you know how many people they will choose to audition, like what is the ratio of how many people submit to how many people get chosen? Thank you.
Hi Heather. I would not wait too long. They will audition as many actors as they need to to fill the roles. There is no ratio of how many people submit to how many people get chosen. but trust me, thousands of people have sent in their info. Better get your stuff sent in.
From Heather: Hello, I have been very interested in acting for Disney channel sice I was very young, The only problem is that I am 19 years old. I would love to send a resume and picture of myself for the disney auditions, Do you think they would consider me? I am very good at acting and singing and have been doing them both since I was around 4 years old. Thank you and I appreciate it very much.
PS. Is 19 years old too old to be on disney channel. I noticed that many of the characters that are on Disney channel are around my age and a little older, So that at least gives me some hope still!!
Hi Heather. 19 is not too old. As you observed, actors of all ages are needed. Many of the "teens" are actually young-looking 20+ actors. Would they consider you? I have no idea. But I suggest that along with your pic and résumé, you send a video of your best clips (include comedic material.) You are competing with other accomplished actors and the CD will want to see what you can do in order to consider you for an audition.
From Thumbelina: From your experience, How do you create a portfolio for acting/voice over, singing, dancing and modeling?
Hi Thumbelina. You do it by reading through the appropriate sections of AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
From Thumbelina: Can you become an actress all by yourself. I mean if you have no one that supports or help you, with passion and talent can you go about it by yourself?
Hi Thumbelina. No. Everyone has people who support and help them. So part of what you have to do is develop friends and acquaintances who understand your desire to act. This can take a while if you live in an area where there is not much acting. One way to meet other people interested in acting is to get involved in local community theatre.
Most communities have one or more local or regional community theatre. Many churches also put on plays and most high schools put on a play or several plays each year.
These same local groups can also help you find out about local classes and workshops where you can study acting and improve your natural talent. Some groups even hold their own classes.
Where to find local classes or auditions with local groups? Look in the newspapers (call your papers and find out which day of the week and in which section they publish audition notices.) Also look for performance listings. Call the phone number listed for ticket sales and ask about future auditions and about classes.
Attend community play performances. Talk to cast members after the show. Tell them you are interested in their group and would like to join and audition for plays (be sure to mention how much you enjoyed their play and performance.) Find out whatever info you can about their auditions and also ask if they know of any classes in the area. Most community groups publish a newsletter for members. These will also contain audition or class notices.
Search the web. Start your search at AWOL's Thousands of Great Acting Links . Many groups have web pages that list play schedules, audition dates and classes if they host any. Go to the major search engines and search sites using key words such as "theatre" and the name of your state and/or city.
Another place to contact is your local colleges and universities. These places frequently produce shows which are open for the public to audition. Many of them also hold classes which are open to the general public through "Community Outreach" programs. Look in the phone book.
Go to as many auditions as you can.
If you don't get a part in a play, then volunteer to help on the stage, costume, set design or lighting crews. Becoming involved in theatre productions, even behind the scenes, will give you important experience in how the performing business works and can be included on a theatrical resumŽ as well.
Remember, even the best actors started with behind the scenes work and small parts. Take whatever parts you can get. As you improve your skills and experience, you will get better and better roles. Don't be in such a rush to start at the top. Learn your craft slowly, improve your knowledge and skills step by step. You'll find building that résumé a lot more fun and much less discouraging if you take a smart and methodical approach to your training.
From bj: hi

From alyssa milano fan : I was wondering when people get presents, cards and letters from people on set do they actually keep them or do they have to give it back
Hi alyssa milano fan. I have no idea what you are asking. You will have to be more clear.
From Judy: when i decided to become an actor i picked my stage name from a telephone book who am i
Hi Judy. - Eugene Rubessa.
From arlene: where is this because i want to be a disney channel actress on hannah montana?
Hi arlene. Where is what?
From Mia: Well I'm ten years old and my family and I are having money problems. I have a big dream to meet Miley Cyrus, and to act on her tv show. Is it possible that I might get to be on her tv show. I don't like watching her show though because every time I do I just get sad because I keep on thinking I'll never meet her.
Hi Mia. Do not fret. In a year or so , you will out grow your desire to meet Miley Cyrus. To try for an opportunity to get on Hanna Montana, see the following audition info:

From Thumbelina: I love to act. I love to sing. They are my passions.I want to be apart of Disneys Legacy. But thats the thing my family doesnt believe in what i want. But the thing is that i dont want to wait for a talent angent or for sombody to tell me "Thumbelina you should get into acting or thumbelina Disney isnt for you". I wanna start now and go after what i want, not what my parents want for me. I have been reading everything on this website. Ive read the articles everything. I beleive in my heart that i will make it. It isnt a want. Its gonna happen. I take drama class and i live in NewYork.I even practice on my free time and even when i dont have free time. Do you have any tips or words of inspiration to me pushing to follow my dreams?
Hi Thumbelina. (PLEASE NOTE: AS OF JANUARY 1, 2007 - THE DISNEY CHANNEL AUDITIONS ARE DONE. DO NOT SEND YOUR INFO. TO THE ADDRESS BELOW. THE AUDITIONS ARE FINISHED) Yes, attend auditions. There may still be a Disney Channel audition scheduled in NY. Call the casting people and ask:
Goldwasser/Meltzer Casting .
And, of course, NY has many, many auditions for Broadway and professional theatre and Disney shows. Keep an ey on the AWOL's Instant Auditions page and check local audition sources like
Playbill and Actors Equity: Casting Call.
From Thumbelina: I am going to Florida Disney. To actually work at disney as an entertainer or a character look like requires acting. From your knowledge how would you practice being like the charecter? I have to act like them look like them and everything.
Hi Thumbelina. I would start by observing the characters and trying to understand the essence of each character. Do not try to mimic the way the current actors move or gesture. Try to understand each character's energy, emotion and attitude. Work with your assessment of these things to guide the development of your actions. You also need to be quite bold. Subtle is not generally what is required in this kind of acting.
From x-Denise-x : x-Hiya-x ! x-My dream is that I would love to act on TV, so I told my mum and dad and they said they would try and get me into a theatre school but they cost a lot of money. I don't know if this is just a phase I'm going through or if its my future job ! I also don't really like theatre groups because I don't like stage acting I think its quite cheesy !-x
x- I also live in Scotland which is hard to get famous in. Can you have live in Scotland and get an audition for a movie ? please reply back with some info !-x
Thank you !
love x-denise-x
Hi x-Denise-x . Too bad you reject cheesy stage acting. It is the place you are most likely able to build experience and develop a working knowledge of acting technique. There are so few opportunities to perform in films. There are so many, many more opportunities to perform on stage.
The good film productions require knowledgeable, skilled, experienced actors. Actors who generally learn their art by performing on stage for a number of years.
I do not knnow about the film business in Scotland. There must be some. You will have to seek out whatever opportunities exist. I suspect your best shot is around Edinburgh.
From kengi ---sorry to bother u ---again: if i call the number, what kinds of questions can i ask and what kind of info can they tell me? how come all these other disney channel stars went to all the right casting calls, but everything i do never elevates me to the next step?? why is soooo hard for us (kids asking the questions) but its easy for them, i know some of them may have struggled too, but look at them now,(kids on disney channel)im a very talented singer, look at me. im sooo tired of not knowing the right people. everyone always tells me your sooo talented but i cant showcase my talent in the right places, to the right people. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO, WHERE DO I GO?!?!?!? sorry just fustrated... the address u gave me...is it also a **casting audition place** , where i can go, since there's a possibility they wont call me back after sending in the video. i'll do what i have to.
I have an agency but they never give me any good auditions, they're either for older kids (I'm gonna be 14 in a week) , or a modeling audition...one problem... I DON'T MODEL. and the thing that doesn't make sense is.. there are new movies and shows that come out on Disney channel or whatever that are looking for people that fit my description for a character... but i'm NEVER notified----why bcuz my agencies are not helping! here's another funny thing... u kno kyle massey and Raven- symone from "thats so raven"... i'm with their same exact agency, ssssoooo what do i do if no agencies can asist me in fulfilling my dreams?? once again where do I go??(alrady sent the tape in too)
last question... i give myself lots of exposure even won firt place in singing and acting in this disney expo in Orlando FL. i participate in local plays, and perform in malls-- now what?
Hi kengi. Well, for one thing when you call, say thank you for providing the opportunity to submit your info. They will not be likely to spend time listening to you tell them all about yourself - they are busy and that is what you would be submitting to them. Find out where they will have their next open auditions.
Don't go all whiney about how hard it is to get opportunities. They already know that. It's a given. It is part of the business. It will always be part of the business. Everyone goes through it. Many give up trying.
Besides all that, they are actually giving people like you a great opportunity. Thank them.
Your agency isn't helping you fulfill your dream? Guess what, even though you are with an agency, you still have to do about 90% of the work promoting yourself and finding auditions on your own.
Keep in mind that an agent is your business partner. They get 10% of your income. They are in charge of 10% of the business relationship - the contracting duties of the business and some of the job seeking duties.
You are in charge of the other 90% of the business. The bulk of the job seeking duties and all of the job getting duties. The job seeking duties include finding lots and lots of auditions. The job getting duties include increasing your industry knowledge, developing your perfomance skills, and developing your social skills - this includes learning to be positive about your creative and job seeking efforts and NOT whining.
From Therese & Sophie: hey! me (therese) and my friend sophie were wondering what kind of actors/actresses will you be taking in? from reading some of these questions that people ask, it seems to me that alot of these people are amatures and don't really know what they're getting into. i think it is totally unfair for EXPERIANCED people to be left out and these people who don't know what they're doing to be casted. how can you really stand out from these hundreds of people sending in tapes? what does it take?!! we want this so badly. we are the funniest unique kids :)
Hi Therese & Sophie. WE don't take in any actors. We are a web site about acting. If you are talking about the Disney channel auditions, watch the Disney channel shows mentioned in the notice and see for yourself the kind of actors that are hired - it is what the experienced actors do.
From Mitch: Would it be really bad to enlarge the script when the director doesnt know it
Hi Mitch. Do you mean ad lib your lines? So you are a better writer than the scriptwriter?
From kEnNy: is it a good idea that aspiring actors go to LA for a week discovered to have a chance at being discovered? how can they find an audition place to go to?
Hi kEnNy. The chances that someone going to LA for a week getting discovered is just about 0! Nada! Zilch! Not a good plan. If you want a better plan, I suggest you study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From vickky: hi, i am a performing Arts student in the united kingdom England. but i want to move to new york and i am already planning it. i want to move september 2008 when i finish my Diploma. but i need a job either in soaps, films, presenting or otherwise. i need an agent in new york and i need help how to get one. i also did modelling classes and weekend acting classes. please i need informative information on how to get a good acting job. i would rather prefer soaps or film because i base in acting.
thanks
vickky
Hi vickky. We have lots of informative information in our FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage; also in AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business; also regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Linda : I was wondering when people do a scene where people are in school and they are doing their work in class what are they really doing do they draw?
Hi Linda. They are doing make-believe school work given to them by the assistant director.
From Faith : (x_Babiee_S_x)Said about disney channel auditons do they have a email or contact number im also living in england do you think that could ruin my chances for a call back by the way sorry to ask lots questions but do you know what the show might be about?
Hi Faith . The shows are about a lot of different things. You will have to watch them to see. However, I suspect that is difficult as they are not aired in England. It is also a good guess that the casting people are not apt to come to England to cast anyone.Re: contact info, please see the Disney Audition info elsewhere on this page.
From Ryan: Hi, my name is Ryan and I have a question about acting because I think it would be fun and I am going to Los Angelos in the spring. Obviously there is alot of auditions out there and I am thinking about trying some out to see what happens, but there is one problem. The problem is that I do not have a resume, so basically I am a noone who is trying to be a "someone". So if you can tell me if I need a resume, it would be greatly appreciated. Bye!!
Hi Ryan. Yes, you will need a résumé and a whole lot more. some experience, talent and training is a good idea. To find out how you can get some of these things, see the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Lyissa: Do you believe that one day i can be one of the greatest entertainers out there?
Hi Lyissa. Somebody is going to be the greatest entertainer out there, might as well be you. Better get started. See the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Lyissa: What kind of acting is there?
Hi Lyissa. Good and bad.
From Lyissa: how do i break into acting at this age?
Hi Lyissa. The same as at any other age. You start with the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Edwin: how can i become a hollywood actor if i am an african from Kenya who is only 17 but i know i have the talent?
Hi Edwin. Talent is a start. You now must study acting and practise in local productions. Eventually, when you are ready, you will need to come to LA.
From Roxie: I was wondering if you guys were really putting up auditons cause it said on the internet, and is the show really going to be on disney channel I was also wondering what days you would be holding auditions. I've always wanted to be on disney channel so please respond.
Hi Roxie. See the Disney Channel audition info posted elsewhere on this page.
From kenjah: i sent the audtion tape in, about how long before i receive a call back from them?
should i send it again if i left out in the address "SUITE 201" they wouldnt know what SUote to send it to... right?
Hi kenjah. If you included the company name and the rest of the address, they should get it. re: when can you expect a call back: You should not expect a call back. The casting people receive hundreds upon hundreds of photos and résumés every week. They do not have time to contact anyone except the actors they are interested in seeing. You may or may not be one of those actors. I realize this seems a bit rude or insensitive to your desire to become a famous actor, but that is the way the business works.
From MOODY: Your resource for kids in "the business" is incredible so I thought you might be able to help steer me in the right direction. I have four children (ages 9, 11, 13, 15) who have a band. They've been playing together for 3 years now and have written and recorded several songs. We just finished shooting a video for one of the songs. We've been looking for an agent but need a "music agent" for a kid band...any ideas? The choices for music agents are overwhelming and this is too important to make an uninformed mistake.
You can check the kids out at www.myspace.com/moodycrew
Thanks for your help and thanks for doing what you do...what a great inspiration and resource you are!!!!
Hi MOODY. Sorry, we are an acting resource page, not a musician resource page.
From marrissa: how do you start an acting business on one of your favorite shows
Hi marrissa. You start by studying the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Tori: For the Disney Channel auditions if I don't have a video clip of me acting is it ok just to send in a pic and a resume? Will that hurt my chances of getting the part?
Hi Tori. It is better if they can see samples of your work, but send what you have.
From ryan: i think acting wuld b really fun, but when it comes to people im really shy, any advice?
Hi ryan. Go to local community theatre auditions until you get a small part. Then do your best performing the part. When the show is done, go to more local community theatre auditions until you get a small part. Then do your best performing the part. Keep doing this for about 6 or 7 shows. By that time, you should be done with the shy thing. To help you with the process, see the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From x_Babiee_S_x: Sorry Not Tryna Be Annoying But I Havnt Done Any Shows Infront Of A Actuall Audience So What Could I Send Them ? Would They Mynd If Its Just Me Singing ?
Hi x_Babiee_S_x. Please note this part of the audition info...
Ages 12-17, all ethnicities. We are seeking teenaged actors who also might sing and dance. We are seeking strong, appealing comic actors with star quality for future projects to be produced for Disney Channel.
They might accept you just singing - IF - Your winning personality comes through on the video as well. Perhaps you could include a monolog or two (something with strong comic appeal) to demonstrate your acting talent. They might be interested enough to arrange a formal audition.Of course, you could also call the number listed in the audition info and ask them. After all, they are the ones looking for the talent.
From Taylor: When are the Hannah Montana auditions coming to Buffalo, New York? When did you have to call?
Hi Taylor. They are not likely to come to Buffalo. They will, however come to New York city.Call the number listed within the audition info posted elsewhere on this page and ask them.
From Elsie: I am american but am now living in France. I have always been interested in acting and some people even said that I should try it. But as I'm living over seas, could I still apply for an acting job on disney channel
Hi Elsie. Sure. If they like you, perhaps they will invite you to California for callbacks. Or - perhaps they are thinking of starting a Disney France Channel...You could be one of their first actresses hired! Who knows. No harm in trying.
From x_Baybiee S_x: Thanks Btw When Does The Audtion Fingy End Lyk Is There A Certain Date They Have To Be In By ??
Hi x_Baybiee S_x. Submit ASAP. Don't wait.
From x_Babiee_S_x: on your instand auditions there's one about disney channel looking for young talent or something is that recent can you still send your tapes in or not??
Hi x_Babiee_S_x. You can still send your tapes.
From Abiteur: Hi! I'm still new in modeling/acting industry I'm just hoping if you can help me answer my question. It will be much appreciated. Thank you!
Well, 1st this is my situation... From our local Newspaper here in Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates I saw the advertisement of a talent agency who is claiming that they are freelance and their clients are Versace, Fendi etc. and they are looking for models to send for the photo shoot of Versace catalogue. from that advertisement they are asking for photos so I sent my set card to their email address and a person from that agency ask me to send photos again w/ particular shots that he will tell me.
That shots are... let say not wholesome for me. But I didnt send that photos yet.
And onetime he called me again for the purpose of auditioning me on the phone by giving me some situations and let me throw dialogues/sound and act on the phone like when I'm sad, shock and hot.
He said that the models are usually...(AWOL Note: We edited this portion of the e-mail because it contained some inappropriate, descriptive info)...So Ma'am what do you think? Is it scam or not?
P.S. Gosh! Thank you for building this kind of website. It is a great site. This site is a big help.
Sincerely yours, Abiteur
Hi Abiteur. Yes it is a scam. Do not talk to this person again. Nothing they are asking you to do is anything a real agent would ever ask you to do - especially over the phone. It is creepy. Do not talk to this person ever again - no matter what they promise or tell you. Stay away from them.
From Savannah: I am getting ready to send something in to Disney Channel that was posted on this site. Do I need to make up my own scene and film it and then send it in?
Hi Savannah. No. If you have a video with brief clips of work you have done, then send that. Don't tape made-up scenes. If you don't have clips, then just send your picture and résumé
From john: what is theatre?
Hi john. Theatre or theater (from French "theatre", from Greek "theatron", , meaning "place of seeing") is the branch of the performing arts concerned with acting out stories in front of an audience using combinations of speech, gesture, mime, puppets, music, dance, sound and spectacle -- indeed any one or more elements of the other performing arts. Bernard Beckerman, head of Hofstra University's department of drama, in his book, Dynamics of Drama, defines theatre as what "occurs when one or more human beings, isolated in time and/or space, present themselves to another or others." In addition to the standard narrative dialogue style, theatre takes such forms as opera, ballet, mime, kabuki, puppetry, classical Indian dance, Chinese opera, mummers' plays, and pantomime.

From kengi: how should i dress on an audition, collared shirt, bright colors, light makeup, do i wear jewelry?? HELP plz
Hi kengi. Wear comfortable clothes that are appropriate for the role you are auditioning. Not exactly a costume, but something that allows the auditors to envision you as the character. Don't wear jewelry unless it is appropriate for the role.
From Kengi: if i had a great idea for a show on disney channel, would ibe able to suggest it to the disney channel directors and producers...thanks for anwering my last question and being so honest (i luv u!!)
Hi Kengi. Ideas are easy to come by. Ideas there are plenty. They are interested in a complete treatment and they will only accept it through an agent.
From Ryan: Is JRP A Scam? They ask for $400 for a headshot, we havent been there yet bt thinking about it.Is that a reasonable price?
Hi Ryan. See the AWOL lesson, WHAT ABOUT SCAMS?
From Lyissa: I am 15 years old and my ambition is to become a professional entertainer. I want to sing dance act and model. But my deepest passion is acting and voice acting. I do take drama in school and deep in my heart i know i was born with the talent of acting but all i do is read about acting. i have no oppurtunities to really show the world what i have to offer and i cant afford the classes.i want to be apart of Disneys legacy and to act in romance and tragedy films or in any type of films. I just love acting.I have sucha deep passion for it and i'll never give up on in no matter what. I just know it. how can i create a believable charecters voice for voice acting? What should i do about my problem?
Hi Lyissa. You begin to relize your dream by studying the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Lyissa: how do you know if you have a talent in acting. How do you know if its for you
Hi Lyissa. You have to do some acting - not just read about it. See my response above.
From adam: when will you reight back?
do you have to pay to get a lesson?
where will it be at when you reight back?
Hi adam. Huh? Have you actually looked at the site for more than 10 seconds?
From Natalie: I Think Tht Jade Is Saying Most Things People On Here Have Said! Its True There Less Chance Being Noticed Unless Yr In Sumwere Like L.A Ive Heard Tht Some People Still Send Like Demo's Of There Singing And They Might Arange 2 Make A In Person Auditon For You So I Wouldent Give Up! Sorry About Tht Just Fort It Needed 2 B Said And Do You Know What Ashley Tisdale Real Bebo Is??
Hi Natalie. Ashley Tisdale's Real Bebo??? Sorry Natalie, this is not a fan site. Re: Jade's posting - You can indeed send demo tapes to the US. It is also a good idea to supplement your efforts to get "noticed" by seeking training and performance opportunities where you live. That way, you will be professionally ready when a producer seeks you out to star in their next $100 million (that's US dollars) Hollywood blockbuster.
In other words, Find an Audition - Go to It!
From Stephanie: I am currently involved in community theatre. I have always wanted to be famous, and I feel that comunity theatre is not enough of a challenge for me as an artist on the stage. Can you help me?
Hi Stephanie. Yes. Sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Jade: Heyah! ive always wanted to be a singer or an actress!! ive done singin lessons, competions, audtions, plays, and i even went to stagecoach but it didnt get me anywere really! i soo want to be on a disney tv show like hannah montana!! or have my own show like zoe 101 but the problem is i live in england and ive heard so many times that america is were all the celebrities made it big and the teen stars like jojo..britney spears..hilary duff etc started out but theres never any auditions for disney channel shows or things like that over here!!
Hi Jade. Do not fret about not having the chance to become famous because you live in England. You are not apt to become famous even if you lived in the US. Nothing personal, Jade; the thing is that very few professional actors ever manage to attain fame. Many do, however, manage to earn a nice living. This is because they learn what is available to them where they do live, and get involved in everything they can. So what do you have available to you over there? I'll bet if you looked around, you would find some pretty good stuff.
From jade: please answer my last question too and that audtion that you put up on instant audtions about disney channel do you think that they will just have them in america??
Hi jade. They are not likely to be going to England. Could happen, but I wouldn't wait for it to happen. What's in england?
From Adam: how do you get started in acting?
What age do you have to be to go in acting?
Hi Adam. You get started by studying the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, signing-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, studying AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly checking AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Deborah: I am having problems imagining the "fourth wall" when I do community theatre. Can you give me some hints so that I can overlay the sea of faces - which scare the #%$$%$ out of me??
Hi Deborah. You are having trouble because you are trying to do the impossible. The fourth wall doesn't exist. The audience can see you; you can see the audience. They are there. They are looking at you; you are looking at them. Use them.
Professionals use interactions with the audience to develop their performance. This can be as blatant as actually addressing the audience (as with an 'aside') or as subtle as being aware of audience reactions (attention, gasps, laughter, chatter, etc.) to gauge the effectiveness of aspects of the performance - then making necessary adjustments.
If your character is not intentionally focusing upon the audience, then you should be attending to whatever you are supposed to be focused upon - in your imagination. For instance, if you are supposed to be seeing a ship in the sea - which happens to be floating in the audience space, then you should be imagining the ship, out there, in the sea. Do not let your eyes focus upon anyone in the audience. Imagine seeing the ship. Imagine the details of the ship and the sea and the sky, clouds, waves, etc. You should be so busy seeing the ship that you will hardly notice that you are actually looking at the audience.
From kengi: thank you so much for this site, for the Address, the number for Disney channel... thanks, my agents don't do anything for me...thanks for answering my last question. how long should my audition tape be, Im really excited about sending it in, i dont want to mess it up, what are they looking for in an audition?
Hi kengi. Your tape should be several different performance cuts - a total of a minute or two. If your best work doesn't show up in the first 10 seconds or so of each segment, they will will toss it and move on. Kind of brutal, but really, who wants to sit and view hours upon hours of dreadful audition tapes? Noone. So yours better be top notch out of the chute.
From Olivia: Hi, i was wondering if i could be on the show hannah montana, or have my own disney channel show. i luv to sing and act. now i know that many kids say the same thing that i am saying now, but u do not know how badly i want to be in this business. i have been in plays and in quiore. please please, messege me back!

From Dayana: How old do you have to be to act in Disney Channel?
Hi Dayana. Seems they are looking for 12-17 yr. old males and females.
From Ashlee: I have not taken any lessons yet. I really don't think I need them. How do you know if you are ready to start your porfolio and send it to an agent?
My mom said all actors and actresses took a drama class in school.
I keep telling her no. I don't know what it is I just can't do well with school
plays.
Hi Ashlee. Have you ever watched those American Idol auditions where the singer thinks they are really good - but Simon suggests they get some singing lessons and try again some other year? Well, you need lessons.

From Ashlee the acting lover: I have never had acting lessons I AM 14 I think I am a good actress I think.
How do you know you are a good actor without lessons? For some reason I don't like doing stage plays like at school I don't know why.I really want this bad.
But my parents don't have much money so I can't take lessons what do I do!
Hi Ashlee the acting lover. Start by studying the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage.
From kengi: i have braces they don't come off until ... maybe late December, and its early November. But thanks to you guys(for address) i want to send an audition tape for disney channel. I'm really self concious of my braces. Maybe they are looking for a girl with braces...maybe they're NOT. what do I do? Do I wait or...
Hi kengi. Mention in your audition info that your braces will come off next month. If they want yo hire you and want you to wear baraces, you will be fitted with fake braces for the shoot. So don't fret about the braces. Get them removed when they are due to be removed.
From Savannah: If you are someone between the ages 12 and 17 and are very interesting and determined to audition for Disney Channel, do you need a resume? The only acting and things I have done are Elementary School skits I was interested in and Drama plays. Nothing major. Will I still have a chance with that?
Hi Savannah. The audition info states: "...Please submit any available CDs, DVDs or tapes as well as pictures and résumés. These items will not be returned.
..." Send whart you have.
From Brianna: I have to hold this guys' hands in the play I'm in... a lot. But its kind of embarassing because my hands get really sweaty. How can IU stop my hands from always doing that? It doesn't always happen when I'm nervous; they are like that a lot!
Hi Brianna. Dry and powder your hands when you are off-stage, a minute or so before your scene entrances. You should be focused on your performance, so you should not be thinking about your hands.
From Harry Potter Fan: hi, its me again, i forgot to ask this in my last thing. thank you for answering so quick. K so i told you that i really wanted to be a film actress, but i have a few problems, i would like to know if you could help me. one is that i live in the tiniest town ever! its so small, we don't even have a mall or a movie thatre or anything! not one single thing, all we have is tiny little shops downtown. So i'm not sure how to get started, i think its harder in a small town like mine.
and second is that i have some pimples, not bad at all, i have maybe 8 or nine at the most some days, sometimes as little as 3, but i can never have just a clear face, and im not sure why, i clean my face everyday, and i put medication on everynight while i sleep, but they never fully go away, do you have an sugestions? my mom said she would buy me proactive, but she hasn't yet, and i hate talking about my pimples so i don't want to ask, but i guess i will have to, but do you know if proactive works as well as they say it does, or do you know if it will work for my minor pimples? do you think i have any chance of becoming an actor with my pimples, becasue i think that they along make my face look ugly, because nothing else is wrong with my face, escept my two front teeth are a bit crroked, but none of the rest are. if you could please answer these questions for i would be really thankful, and if you have any sites that have tips on how to get rid of pimples, i would be extremely grateful
thank-you, bye
Hi Harry Potter Fan. Do not fret about your pimples. Make-up will cover them.
How to get started in a small, small, small town? First, read throught all the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
Second, if there are absolutely no acting opportunities available to you where you live, then you have the excellent opportunity to create your own opportunities. Start your own theatre group. EGADS!!! Is that possible? Of course it is. There are thousands of local theatre groups that were started by someone like you. Someone who wanted to act, couldn't find a group near them or a group they liked, or whatever reason, and they started their own acting group.
You do not have to start big. Perhaps a few like minded friends doing dramatic readings to start. You don't even need special costumes, lights, scenery and all the other fancy stuff. All you need is a script, actors, a place to rehearse and perform and an audience.
Here are a few books that can help you learn what you need to know. You might find them - or similar books - in your local library: Amateur Dramatics - Jack Cassin-Scott, 1992 Hi Concept-Lo Tech : Theatre for Everyone in Any Place - Barbara Carlisle, Don Drapeau, 1996 Play Directing in the School : A Drama Director's Survival Guide - David Grote, 1998 Play Director's Survival Kit : A Complete Step-By-Step Guide to Producing Theater in Any School or Community Setting - James W. Rodgers, Wanda C. Rodgers, 1997.
You can also create your own one person show. You can go here to find out a little about this aspect of performing: http://www.charlesbusch.com/Solo%20Performances.htm
From i need this answered! : i was reading through your site and i found the disney channel audition information. " TV - Nationwide talent search for projects to be produced for Disney Channel "
is this info up to date, can i still submit myself for it? and it says that you can submit youself to it even if you don't live in texas, i don't live in texas, but iwould like to submit myself to it, but the thing is, i actually don't even live in the united states. i live about three hours away from toronto, and maybe less than an hour away from buffalo, do you know if i can still submit to it. and if i can, i don't exactly understand how to do it, im 14 years old but i'll be 15 next month. what is an actors slate? do i have to pay for one? can i send them my school picture, plus a head shot and a body shot? i don't have any experience to put on a resume, i was supossed to be in a play in december, but i had to quit because i found out i will be going to toronto the same day as the play. how do i make a resume? and do i have to be in a union to submit my self to them?
please explain this all to me as i am not to clear on what i have to do, and if i can even do it. also what kind of videos (to send) do they mean?
thank-you and PLEASE answer this as clearly as you can, lol, thanks
Hi i need this answered!. You can still submit yourself. I have no idea if they would be interested in someone living in Toronto, but it can't hurt to send in your info. You might get lucky.
Before we spend a lot of our time answering all your questions with information we have already written, YOU have to spend YOUR time reading through our FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, and studying AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business.
From Reya: Model life seems so glamorous and something I would want to pursue, but I wanted to think of the pros and cons. Naturally, I can think of the pros - but where would be a good place to read about the cons to getting into such an industry. Thanks!
Hi Reya. Check out this site: Howtomodel.com
From Harry Potter Fan: hi, i really really want to become a film actress, its the only thing i can imagine doing. i've read your tread about open audition abd how thay are not usually ligitimate, but i have some questions, so please could you answer them?
I recently attended an open call for (name witheld by AWOL) and i got chosen to go to their "weekend" where i get to meet agencies from all the big places, like LA, and such. it didn't cost any money to go to the open call, but it does cost some to go to the weekend. all during the open call they told us about fake agencies and everything and how you shouldn't pay and stuff. but they do have to pay for all those people to fly in, and for the ballroom at the hotel. They gave us a special discount for the hotel room, and its a very nice hotel. also they don't make us get head shot or anything, we can just take them with a plain old camera, so we don't have to pay for that.
i am already going to the weekend, because even if i don't get anything, i know that if i didn't go i would really regret it later. i have to do a 30 second monolouge, and then if an agent wants to talk to you you get a call back.
i would like to know if you have ever heard of (name witheld by AWOL), and what you think of it. be as truthfull as you can, but please don't try to bash my dreams :
P thank-you, and please please please answer this! bye!
Hi Harry Potter Fan. I wouldn't dream of bashing your dreams. If you want to become a professional actress, attending such "weekends" is one of the worst ways to get started. You have already read the scam page so there is no point duplicating the scam info here. So kiss your money goodby, have a nice time, and when you get back, you can pursue your acting quest the smarter way.
From KAYLA: HOW DO I GET A AGENT? IM REALLY TALENTED ALL I NEED IS A AGENT TO GET ME IN THE ACTING BUISSNESS!!!!!!
Hi KAYLA. See the AWOL lesson, "I GOTTA GET AN AGENT ! ! !"
From Sam: Do you know who to submit pictures to for Disney print work? We have recently done well with several print jobs and would like to submit our daughter to Disney for print jobs.
Hi Sam. Sorry, we are an acting page, not a modeling page.
From cheryl: hi...i'm really interested in getting into acting...more so plays and musicals. i also want to get my children involved in commericals and the likes...but i'm confused on what should go on a resume' esp. if you've never really acted anywhere before. i've done church plays, but that's all...what info can you give me regarding resume's. thanks
Hi cheryl. See the AWOL lessons, WHAT EVERY ACTOR NEEDS TO KNOW and "I GOTTA GET AN AGENT ! ! !".
From chinae: how much does it cost for an agent
Hi chinae. See the AWOL lesson, "I GOTTA GET AN AGENT ! ! !"
From danny: Hi AWOL! I am getting ready to audition for Disney channel, and I have a few questions about general open calls, so I don't mess up. The application said that if you can sing, you can prepare a song, but does that mean acapella or CD accom. or piano sheet music? And, for monologues, what is a monologue that would be comedic but suitable for children's television. Disney channel, nickelodean, and others are great channels for kids, but the acting/comedy doesn't seem actually realistic, but just like cartoon humor. do you know a place where there are monologues like that? thanks a lot!
Hi danny. You are always safe bringing sheet music - which is the usual thing to do. an accompanist is usually provided unless the audition info states otherwise.
Monolog? Don't look for a "Disney" kind of monolog. Just find a comedic monolog that suits your type and ability. Select one that is within your range of competence. Don't overreach.
From Lola: Hi im 12 years old and I love to act. Im going into the 9th grade next year and I was wondering if i could get any advice on some agencies i should look in to... I also would like to know what requirements i would need. I would love to be on a show or even in a movie. I would like to know how to apply for these aswell.
Thanks,
Lola
Hi Lola. See the AWOL lesson, "I GOTTA GET AN AGENT ! ! !"
From Vicky: I am a (name withheld by AWOL) School Of Modeling Graduate, I paid approximately $1,400 to take the classes. I really didn't learn anything america's next top model could't teach me. Anyway that was about a year ago when I was naive. SO this year they sent me a postcard saying that they were having a competition for students and graduates where the top 22 would get $60,000 in prizes such as photoshoots including styling and make-up. They named a specific winner who after winning the competition booked a job with Eon Model Management one of the angencies at the competition. now of course they asked for $745.00 as an entry fee, and you have to get to the Orange County convention center on your own. so thats another hassel. anyway they say this $745 covers the fees for them to fly in World renouned agencys like Elite Models NYC, and others all over the world, they make it make so much sense. Its not that i have money to just give away (i'm 18
and i live on my own and i have a daughter so you can only imagin the bills i have). I turned them down, but they said they would keep me in the data-base for next years competition, oh yeah this is their 18th annual competition. and another question: Is (name of talent competition withheld by AWOL) a legitimate occasion to meet legitamate angents and get signed? oh yeah and after I graduated from (name withheld by AWOL) they asked me to sigh a MODEL/AGENT contract for them to rep. me but they charged a %35 commission off any job i do, even if i have to find the work myself, i didn't sign it, was i wrong for that? thanks in advance for your much anticipated answer. Thanks so much for this site! :)(:
Hi Vicky. Smart of you not to sign a contract giving a 35% commission. That is entirely too much. The whole modeling school and competition thing is such a scam, good thing you did not get taken in by it. Scratch these folks off your list for good. They only want your money. For more info, see the AWOL lesson, WHAT ABOUT SCAMS?
From Kaitlyn: I am 13 years old and for almost all my life I have wanted to be an actress and I have always been a fan of the Disney Channel. I know about Disney Channel going to several places for auditions to be on the Disney Channel and the closest place to me is Chicago and that is 5 hours away from where I live. I told my parents that its what I really want to do and they don't care, but they have known that its my dream for months and months. They won't take me because they think its too far away and this is almost my only chance to do what I really want to do, act for Disney Channel. The shows I really want to be in are The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and MOSTLY and MAINLY Hannah Montana. Are there any other ways to audition for Disney Channel besides what they are doing right now? Can I or my parents get in touch with the casting people for Disney Channel in any way and convince them that I am the best for a part and/or audition for them? Thanks for the help! !
Hi Kaitlyn. (PLEASE NOTE: AS OF JANUARY 1, 2007 - THE DISNEY CHANNEL AUDITIONS ARE DONE. DO NOT SEND YOUR INFO. TO THE ADDRESS BELOW. THE AUDITIONS ARE FINISHED) You seem to have missed the announcement. Read the whole thing:

From Ann: This is actually a few tips for memorizing lines. Several people have already mentioned making a tape recording. In our plays at the community theater, we go a bit farther. Instead of reading each line monotone and whispering your own, we have several read throughs before we start rehearsal. Once everyone has a sense of their character, we record our read through and make CDs (or tapes) of it.
Since I have quite a daily commute, I can take advantage of all that time by learning my lines. Just play the tape or CD in the car, at work (if you can) or at home. Even play it while you go to sleep, and maybe some of it will seem in through osmosis! It really helps me to get my cue lines in the voice and character they will be in for the performance.
I have another tip for when you need to run lines, but have no one around to help you. Take the first scene of the play and read through it a couple times. Then, take Post-It Notes and cut them into strips, just long enough and thick enough to cover your lines, not your cues. Then, you can read your cues and say your lines out loud. If you need to read the line, just lift the non-sticky side of the Post-it. If you find you need frequent reminders on a line, write a hint on the Post-it and cover it with another. Then you can get a hint, then your whole line if you still don't remember.
This can be a little time consuming, but it has always really helped me out. Another thing this is good for is when you have only part of the play memorized. You can keep your lines covered so you aren't reading them even though you know them (something I often do - if you're already looking at the book, your eyes just jump to the lines, even though you know them). Leave any lines you are still u sure of uncovered. Hopefully, you can cover more and more each day!
Post-it notes are also good for writing blocking notes, character notes, and reminders. I don't know what I would do without them!
Hi Ann. Thanks for the tips. We'll post them to the AWOL lesson, LINE! LINE! WHAT'S MY LINE?
From Ashley: i really want to be an actor. but i am scared to try,you see i'm scared of failing because i am used to it. the question is is it crazy to try?
Hi Ashley. It is not crazy to try. Feeling scared is normal. See the AWOL lesson, THE NERVES (Stage Fright)
From bby denise: I have been wanting to be a disney channel actress for the last couple of months and thats been my dream since then. I don't just want to be a disney channel actress I would also love to be in a movie. I'm 12 and I just recently told my mum and dad that thats what I want to be but they just said that they thought I couldn't do it because they think I'm really shy and I wont have what it takes. Every time I watch a movie with kids my age in it I just think that it could be me instead of them ! I live in Scotland so my mum says that she doesn't think that I could get a part because a lot of actresses all get discovered in America. Please help me by sending me an address that would help me get the information I need. Thanks !!
Hi bby denise. See our previous response to daisy, below.
From brittany: how do dakota fanning get on the big screen at such a young age?
Hi brittany. This is from the Internet Movie Database:
Hannah Dakota Fanning was born on the 23rd of February 1994, in Conyers, Georgia, USA. Before her debut into the cinematic world, Dakota did her own acting around her house. She was very active for her age, and often put a blanket under her shirt and pretended to be having a baby, using her younger sister, who is also an actress now, Elle, as the baby. Dakota went to a playhouse near her home, where the children that attended put on a play every week to show to their parents. But the people running the playhouse noticed that Dakota stood out, and advised her parents, Joy and Steve Fanning, to take her to an agency. They believed that she was extremely talented...(more)
From irocawear: I went to an open call at one of the top modeling agencies in the world and after the interveiw he gave me a paper saying they were very interested in seeing additional photos of me. Does this mean their actually interested or is that just a rejection telling me that they didn't want me to feel bad upon my rejection?
Hi irocawear. I think it is a request to see more pictures of you. Unless. of course, it is a scam. To find out if it is a scam, see the AWOL lesson, WHAT ABOUT SCAMS?
From Andrea: Hello,
my name is Andrea and Im 12 years old; and I live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, I moved here 1 1/2 years ago, from my natal country Colombia I also have a Tourist U.S passport that can help me go to New York easely for auditions. I started liking acting when I was about 8/9 years old but I never had a chance (becase I lived in Colombia, But even in colombia I had drama classes 2 time a week). But now that I am in Canada the chances to get on the acting business are higher, but theres a problem. During my first year in Canada I paid 900 Canadian dollars to an "agent" for some portafolio pictures, but after a few months he dissapired, so now I am really cautious about agencies. So here comes my questions, could you recomendate some agencies/ agents and add to them (just normal info: like phone number, address etc. That are located in Toronto/ New York).
With All Due Respect.
Andrea.
Hi Andrea. Sorry we do not give recommendations. However, if you want to learn how to find legitimate agents and how to avoid scammers, see the AWOL lessons, "I GOTTA GET AN AGENT ! ! !" and

Hi victor. See the AWOL lesson, WHAT ABOUT SCAMS?
From Rick: Well.. I think it would be awsome to be a professional actor. However Im 31 years old and have absolutly no experience or a professional resume. So I decided to do the next best thing, STUNTMAN!! But even just to do stunts on a set that is part of a union, you still need to be part of the union as well. To earn a SAG card, I understand you have to get 3 vouchers. All though to get the 3 vouchers you need to get a roll in a SAG affiliated film or something. How can i do this with out experiance? Who would want a 31 year old man that dont have the experiance of todays young, talented actors.
Hi Rick. Yes, it would be awesome. However, you probably won't get a job as a stunt person unless you have the qualifications and knowhow. Who would want to assume the financial risk?If you want to learn how to become an actor, and earn an income at it as well, see the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.

Hi Brianna. Interesting. But we are not lawyers. If you think you want to get involved in a business relationship with an agency, you need to show the contract to a lawyer familiar with entertainment law.

From Dash: Hello again. Could you help me get some information on how to contact the casting director for the show LOST? As popular as it is, do you think they would even consider looking at more unknown faces, or would a show like this only look into a category A-type actors who live in LA and who've been in the business for years? Or are they always looking for all type of people, and if so, would they be consistently auditioning and where/how? Or do you think the future episodes/seasons have already been cast? Also, got any ideas on what to say on a cover letter if I'd have to write one? Please help if you know the answers to any of these questions?
Thanks!
Hi Dash. Lost: Casting - Junie Lowry Johnson, Libby Goldstein, Paramount Studios, 5555 Melrose Avenue, Von Sternberg Building, #104, Los Angeles, CA 90038. Carlson, 680 Iwilei Road, #495, Honolulu, HI 96817-5388.I have no idea who they decide to cast or not cast. For cover letter info and the like, see the AWOL lesson, "I GOTTA GET AN AGENT ! ! !"
From daisy: My dream is to become a Disney Channel Actress and I would like ur advice ! People think of me is being the "Shy one" and I blush a lot but I want to know if I can still furfill my dreams ! My name is Daisy and I am 12, and when I told my mum and dad about this they just said that they think that I wouldn't have what it takes and also said that because we live in Scotland It will be more difficult for that to happen. I'll soon have to pick my classes in a few months and I want to know if its worth taking classes that will help me become an actress because I'm not sure if its just a phase or if its my real dream ! I can be really loud and free infront of my mates but I want to know if it is a true feeling. My mum and dad asked me if I wanted to go to a dance/acting/singing school that would help but it was 1000 pounds a year but they said they could FIND the money but I felt that It was too much and besides I don't really want to do stage acting I'd rather be in a movie or program.
Hi daisy. It will be most difficult getting a part in a Disney Channel show when you reside in Scotland. It is not too likely the casting people will be coming to Scotland any time soon. However, it is quite possible you can become an actress, if you are willing to start at the beginning. If you want to become a professional actor, it is extremely important that you start to get practical experience and start to build an acting resumé. The easiest, most accessible and, for beginners, the best way to get experience and build a resumé is to get involved in lots of local community, school and church plays.
Why local plays? Well, unless you live in HOLLYWOOD, you probably won't get many chances to audition for major motion pictures. (Anyway, what Hollywood director would risk a 25 million dollar budget on an unknown with no experience. Sheeeesh! Get real!) So plays are the most likely place to start getting some experience. And frankly, theatre training is a great way to learn about acting. It's also great fun and you'll meet a lot of interesting people.
For more inf, see the AWOL lesson, WHAT EVERY ACTOR NEEDS TO KNOW.

From charlotte: i am only 13 but i would love to act on programmes on disney channel but i live in england and i haven't had much experience with acting. my parents probably wouldn't let me go to an acting school, and even if they did, i don't think i'm good enough to get into one. I don't want to give up though because i would really love to be on disney channel. what can i do?
Hi charlotte. Well, if you can't go to acting school, perhaps you can find a beginners class near you so you can learn some of the basics. Then take any acting classes that might be offered at your school. If your school has a drama club, you should join it. Also seek out any local amateur theatre groups in your area and join them. These groups are good places to learn about acting and get some experience by acting in stage performances.

From Chisom: How do I get an acting job on Disney Channel?
Hi Chisom. Oh, that's easy. All you have to do is find out who the casting people are for all the shows on the Disney Channel, then convince one of them that you are the best actor for a part.In the mean time, See the FREE lessons on the AWOL homepage, sign-up for AWOL's FREE How To Get Discovered Club, study AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
From Ginia D.: My name is Ginia D. I am 26 years old. I have always wanted to be an actress. I have competed in pageants and when I was younger I made it to a few auditions. I am currently in the Army stationed in Belgium. The more I work the more I realize I have one life and i wish I would have tried harder at my goal to become an actress. I am resenting the decisions I have made. I would like to know what I can do while stationed here to begin my career as an actress. It is hard because I have read so many books on what to do but I do not know where to begin here in Belgium. What training can I do so while here? So when I return to the States I can begin to audition and find work.
Hi Ginia D. Either get involved with local theatre groups, or start your own in Belgium. I suspect you can find some like-minded people who would be interested in starting a small theatre group. For some basic info re: how to go about that, see this web site: http://www.aact.org/start/index.html.You can also create a solo performance. Here's a jumping off point for you to investigate that possibility: http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/artweb/playwriting/solo.html.
From Simone: I am a begining actor. I've started taking acting lesson, and I am enjoying them. I like acting and would like to start in theater and gain some experience. However, my dream acting job would be to act on a soap opera. How difficult is it to get an audition for a soap opera without an agent? I can't commit to an agent right now because I work fulltime. When I start auditioning, it will have to be for things that I can fit into my schedule. Also, I live in Florida. If I did ever get an agent, would they hear of auditions from NY for soap operas?
Hi Simone. See the AWOL lesson, SO YOU WANNA BE A SOAP STAR?
Agents in Florida are not too likely to handle Soap auditions in NY or LA. See AWOL's guide book, ACTING: AWOL's FREE Guide to Earning Money in the Business and regularly check AWOL's Instant Auditions.
