CONGRATULATIONS TO WISCONSIN'S NEW POET LAUREATE!

MARILYN TAYLOR is the new Poet Laureate of Wisconsin.ÊGov. Jim Doyle made the announcement Friday. Marilyn will serve for two years, succeeding Denise Sweet and our first state poet laureate, Ellen Kort. Marilyn says her first priority will be to showcase Wisconsin as a nurturing place for the arts. Translated, that means she's going to be one wildly busy poet attending statewide literary events, reminding people that poetry is alive and well in Wisconsin.Ê

Marilyn also served asÊMilwaukee's poet laureate from 2004 to 2005. She wroteÊsix books of poetry, and teaches for the Honors College at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and at many other venues -- including Redbird Studio. Her work has appeared in a number of journals and anthologies, including The American Scholar, Poetry, Iris, The Formalist, and Poetry magazine's 90th Anniversary Anthology. Winner of the 2003 Dogwood Prize, she also took first place in competitions sponsored by Passager, The Ledge, GSU Review, and Anamnesis Press. Her second full-length collection, Subject to Change (David Robert Books), was nominated for the Poets Prize in 2005. Marilyn is a contributing editor for THE WRITER magazine, where her columns on craft appear six times a year.

For the past year, we've had the luxury of seeing Marilyn twice a month as she led the poetry critique group at the studio. With only two more meetings to go -- Dec. 2 and 16, we face the fact that she will be too busy to commit to an ongoing workshop like this for the next few years. So, on the one hand we congratulate her for this major achievement; on the other, well, darn...
