1. THE SECRET

 

Bill Roorbach wrote an article for Poets and Writers magazine titled, "The Secret to Getting Published, Oft Withheld, Is Finally Revealed." The secret, Roorbach says, is to "write something good."

 

That's the best advice I've ever heard. And, from my catbird seat in the midst of so many writers, I can see who writes "something good." It's the people who work at it. Talk doesn't count. Planning doesn't count. Saying you are going to, doesn't count. The writers whose names show up in our News column are those who show up for workshops, write pages and pages, throw away pages and pages, and just plain do what needs to be done.

 

These are the people who write something good.

Shannon Jackson Arnold is teaching two classes through Waukesha Parks and Rec: "Getting into Print: Learn about the Magazine Market" and "Word Play: How to Be More Creative & Have More Fun with Your Writing."  The classes are held at Martha Merrell's Bookstore in downtown Waukesha, where Shannon also leads the monthly Writer to Writer meetings on second Saturdays. Shauna Singh Baldwin's novel "The Tiger Claw" is on the shortlist of candidates for the Hutch Award, English fiction category.

 

Stephen Boehrer signed with an agent for his latest novel. That's Number 4 for him.

 

Ludmilla Bollow's play, "Flickering Dreams" will be read at the Cornerstone Theatre in the Brumder Mansion, Monday, Feb. 13 at 7 pm. Call Ludmilla for information: 414-352-8370.

 

Eric Hansen's essay, "Winter is Lake Michigan's showiest and finest hour" appeared in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Sunday, January 8, 2006.

 

Doris Hayes was featured in a Paddock Lake Report article covering her Fulbright-Hays trip to Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

 

Les Huisman's "Blue Deodorizer Blues" received a reading by artistic director James Fletcher at the Cornerstone Theatre in the Brumder Mansion, Milwaukee.

 

Jennifer Jordan had a short story published in "Stirring Up a Storm: Tales of the Sensual, the Sexual and the Erotic". She is also editing her own anthology, beginning in October.

 

Anne Landre's blog entry, "State of Their Union," was recently picked up by Crooks and Liars. Anne's popular blog is www.threadingwater.com.

 

Barbara Malcolm's poem, Autumn Teatime, was published in Free Verse, #83. This is her first paper publication.

 

Jill Morin was recognized as a Milwaukee woman "gaining power" in a Milwaukee Magazine special report on "The Power of Women."

 

Linda Mrochinski, Producer of The Academy Theatre (of the Marian Center for Nonprofits), is holding auditions for ³Southern Fried Murder² at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7th in the Auditorium at 3211 S. Lake Drive, St. Francis. Interested individuals aged 16 and up, interested in dinner/theatre productions should be prepared to read from the script  and do a bit of improv. Phone 414- 483-2430.

 

Kim Parsons and her friend Suzanne Bergen published their poems in a cleverly organized book titled "First Person Plural." Parsons' fans who wish to beg for a copy can email her via the studio.

 

Mara Ptacek has had two of her poems, "Your Hands" and "For You: A Valentine" selected for reading on Mona Golabek's nationwide program,The Romantic Hours, which airs locally on Fridays at 10:00 PM on WFMR, 106.9.

 

Elizabeth Ridley has had three of her memoirs accepted by "A Cup of Comfort for Expecting Mothers," to be published in April, 2006.

 

Marilyn Taylor was featured in a story in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, January 14, 2006. Title: "Taking poetic license: Ex-poet laureate applies the sounds, rhythms of her experiences to writings."

 

Robert Vaughan's play, "Interference," was selected by Village Playhouse of Wauwatosa for production in the 2006 One Act Play Festival. Performances are scheduled for March 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26 at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, Brookfield. Tickets 262-781-9520. He shares billing with another Redbird winner, Carol Wobig. (Redbird friends will form a cheering section on a date tba.)

 

Sandi Walker was published for the third time in "Echoes from Sauk Hills," by Sauk County Writers.
