1. AN EXCITING 10TH YEAR

-- The "Young Author" camps are back by popular request and filling fast.

-- Due to high demand, we added more sessions of "Shut Up and Write!" and the roundtable groups. -- The "Saturdays at Redbird" series was a great opportunity for writers. Thanks to all who attended and to our presenters Mel Miskimen, Elaine Bergstrom, Marilyn Taylor, Bill Gagliani, Kurt Chandler, Shannon Jackson, Mara Ptacek, Tom Hanratty and Shauna Singh Baldwin. -- We are planning more "Saturdays at Redbird" for this fall.

-- Nine writers and artists are working in private Rebird studios.

 

 

2. NEWS ABOUT REDBIRD WRITERS AND FRIENDS

RAE SPENCER's short story "Uncle Frank" won Best of Show at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts Writing Contest.

SARA RATTAN's short Story "Neighbors" won an award  in the Wisconsin Academy Review/Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops Short Story Contest. She and the other winners will be reading on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 3-5 p.m. at Cafe Montmartre in Madison (127 E. Mifflin St.) as part of the Wisconsin Book Festival.

KURT CHANDLER won the Council for Wisconsin Writers Levin Short Nonfiction Award for his article "No Exit" in Milwaukee Magazine.  The CWW Awards Luncheon is May 8th at the Wisconsin Club. (See CWW link on Redbird web site for details.)

MARTIN HINTZ won the Council for Wisconsin Writers "Rediscovering Wisconsin Writers" Essay Award for an unpublished work on "Hamlin Garland's Coulee Country."

CHRISTI CLANCY has been accepted to UWM's MA Creative Writing program.

SHAUNA SINGH BALDWIN's novel "The Tiger Claw" is scheduled for publication in Sept. 2004, by Knopf Canada.

AMY JENKINS' story "Samson" was published in the Wisconsin Academy Review. 

BILL GAGLIANI's novel "Wolf's Trap" is a nominee for the Horror Writers Association's Bram Stoker Award in the category of Superior Achievement in a First Novel.

MARILYN TAYLOR Milwaukee's Poet Laureate will be reading from her new book, "Subject to Change," at Centennial Hall, (Central Library, 733 N. 8th St) Sunday, May 2, 1:30 pm.

MAUREEN LAUSTSEN's essay was accepted for publication in the July issue of Milwaukee Magazine, ENDGAME column.

KRIS BABE'S essay "Fire Dreams" was accepted for publication by Sacred Fire anthology.

PAT POLLWORTH's book "Milwaukee Country, Street Names-Street Games" was released in March.

SHANNON JACKSON's book "Everybody Loves Ice Cream" is scheduled for release in late June, 2004, by Emmis Books.

PAT LORENZ / JAN ARMATO / KAY PLISZKA / STEVE BOEHRER / GAIL TOERPE / MARY ROSINA BAER / BETTY NORDENGREN / DORIS HAYES /  MARIO DEL ROSSO: All had stories published in "Great American Outhouse Stories: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt." (anthology by Pat Lorenz).

CLAUDIA BURNS' story about Ospreys has yet another life, this time as a coloring book promoting environmental sensitivity. Local groups are distributing the books to children visiting Sanibel Island, Fla.

JEAN SCHERWENKA had articles published in Fetch and Boxx. The Boxx article was about Redbird. Thank you, Jean.

JOHN WALLACE'S story "When the Porch People Get Here" was published in The Laurel Review (Missouri Arts Council).

COLLEEN ROGAN'S articles appear regularly in Milwaukee Magazine. Pay special attention to the one about ethnic restaurants that appeared in the Menu Guide.

ERIC HANSEN's articles appear in Backpacker magazine. One was a survey of Hidden Hikes in Glacier National Park.

JOHN LEHMAN. Distribution of his new publication "Cup of Poems" is being extended to the Milwaukee area.

JOHN RONDY articles appear regularly in Shepherd Express. Watch for an upcoming feature on the Menomonee River valley.

PAMELA SMILEY has extended her stay in Thailand to continue work on her novel.
