off the list 1. Summer Stuff Studio closed May 27 to June 6 This issue of the Redbird News is being sent a few days early
because the studio will be closed the week of Memorial Day. The boss is playing
hooky. She'll return phone calls and emails soon after her return. A Summer to Write We have a special session of Shut
Up and Write! scheduled for July-August. This is in response to teachers
and those who have asked for a chance to attend this class in the summer, when
they can breath a little easier and focus on writing. We'll cover the same
material as we do in other sessions, but in five meetings rather than six, from
6 to 9 pm rather than 6:30 to 9 pm. If the weather's perfect and everyone's in
the mood, we may take part of a class outdoors, perhaps to the gazebo, to share
writings and talk about the craft. Register now. There are a few spaces available in the summer Roundtable Critique Groups. If you have
attended Shut Up and Write! and have been thinking about joining a roundtable,
here's your chance. Notice that the fee is changing as of the July-August session,
from $65 to $75. Those currently in the group are grandmothered at the old rate
until the end of the year. Kids camps are filling,
but there are still spaces available in most sessions. See the list below. To register for a class,
use the flyer registration form, or print one from our web site, or just send a
note along with your check -- we'll figure it out. Be sure to list your phone number and/or email address. Register now Shut

News About Redbird Writers and Friends Note: "R.W. and Friends" either attended Redbird
workshops, or taught them, or support the studio in some special way. If you
sent information and it did not appear, please forgive and send it again. Web
sites are listed but not necessarily linked. Shauna Singh Baldwin participated in an opening panel
discussion for the Writers
Union of Canada Annual General Meeting in Toronto on May 26, 2005. She is reading from
her latest novel "The Tiger Claw" (Knopf Canada, 2004) at North York Library in Toronto on May 28. From June 3-5 she will be
teaching a weekend course on creative writing at the University of Alberta at
Edmonton. This
course is part of the "Women's Words: Summer Writing Week" program in June
2005. Judy Beehler has completed a year of intense
study in which she earned an advance diploma of the Association Montessori
Internationale
(AMI). A long-time teacher in Wauwatosa schools, Judy is also developing "Meet Zooey," a creative approach to inspiring
young writers. Elaine Bergstrom's story, Out of the Mist, appeared in the June issue of Milwaukee Magazine, in a special fiction section of
stories with Milwaukee roots. Debra Brenegan and friends are
teaching a poetry camp for youth entering 6th-12 grades. It's at Woodland
Patterns Bookstore, June 20-24.(contact Julie Strand, 414-263-5001). Anne Bingham After having been accepted in July,
2002, Anne Bingham's poem, A Woman Clothed with the Solar System, finally has been printed in Issue 99
(Spring, 2005) of the science fiction magazine, Space & Time . She wonders if this is the local
record for length of time between acceptance and publication. She also wonders
if, since she actually got paid for it (and the check cleared!), she can now
call herself a professional poet. Richard Carter was awarded first place in the Al P.
Nelson Feature Article contest at the Wisconsin Regional Writers Association (WRWA) conference in Black River
Falls. Doris Hayes was accepted for a Fulbright-Hays Educators Group Project Abroad.
She'll visit and study in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam for 5 weeks this
summer, then share her insights with educators at schools and in conferences.
She hopes to have articles and photographs published about this project, as she
did after her last Fulbright-Hays trip to Japan. Shannon Jackson Arnold's recent publication include: The
lead story on Native Art in the Wisconsin Gallery and Art Museum Guide (a custom publication by Wisconsin Trails); a short blurb on the Waukesha Art
Crawls in Wisconsin
Trails; two
short upfront pieces in Milwaukee Home (on downtown Waukesha and artist Mark Lajiness). Stacey Kannenberg and Linda
Desminowich won the 2005 Adding Wisdom Award from Parent-to-Parent and a Silver Addy for illustrations from the American Advertising Awards for their book, "Let's Get Ready For Kindergarten!" The book was featured in the Midwest Book Review, May 2005
on line magazine under "Small Press Bookwatch," "Children's
Shelf." Stacey and Linda are currently completing illustrations for Let's Get Ready For
First Grade! And, through their Cedar Valley Publishing, they published a new title, Daddy, Where are
You? by Barbara
Rockaway, about a little boy who is learning to communicate in new ways with
his deceased father. (cedarvalleypublishing.com) John Lehman has been asked to do a reading of
his one-person show, "A
Brief History of My Tattoo," at The Cornerstone
Theater in
Milwaukee next fall, with a short run of the actual production later in the
season. Mara Ptacek is encouraging poets to submit work
to Wisconsin Fellowship
of Poets (WFOP)
Triad Contest. Three categories are open for submission June 1 to August 1.
(www.wfop.org) John Rondy's feature article
about Milwaukee High School of the Arts, They're Artists, Students,
& Successful, appeared on the cover of Shepherd Express, May 19-25. Aaron Schutz's story, Red Arrow Replay, appeared in the June issue of Milwaukee Magazine, in a special fiction section of
stories with Milwaukee roots. Aaron is teaching a course in Science Fiction and
Fantasy writing at Redbird this fall. Soulstice Theatre (here at the Marian
Center) will present two exciting projects in June: "Virtual Reality"
by Alan Arkin, June 2,3,4,9,10,11 and Visit by Sheila Quinn Simpson -- author
of "Apology" -- on June 4th. Call 414-431-3187 for reservations. Julie Vance is Editor in
Chief/Publisher of Milwaukee Yoga Magazine. She is getting ready to publish
another issue of the magazine and is welcoming submissions -- and advertisers.
