REDBIRD NEWS - JULY, 2004

1.  SUMMER NEWS

2.  FALL PREVIEW

3. NEWS ABOUT REBIRD WRITERS AND FRIENDS

4. HOW TO: HELP/CONTACT/REPORT

1. SUMMER NEWS

SUMMER MINI-SESSIONS FOR ADULTS are filled. There are no adult groups

during August. We  begin again in Sept. (See "Fall Preview.")

REDBIRD WRITERS READ AT  GROTTO GREEN Sunday, July 18th,  1-3 pm.

(free) Grotto Green is the lawn area immediately behind the studio.

You

are invited to sit in the shade of the old apple tree and hear members

of the afternoon roundtable group read original prose, poetry, essays

and humor. Special guest SHANNON JACKSON ARNOLD is bringing samples

inspired by her new book, "Everybody Loves Ice Cream." (Perfect

timing.

This is Ice Cream Appreciation Month!) Also featured: DOUG JACOBSON,

PAT SCHLICK, DOREEN ZELLER, PAM PARKER, BETH RIDLEY, STEVE BOEHRER,

BARB MCCLOSKEY, MAURA FITZGERALD, JAN ARMATO (Organizer of the event.

Thank you, Jan.)  KRIS BABE, SHARON TRANER, RICHARD CARTER  and MEL

MISKIMEN. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and maybe a picnic lunch or a

bottle of wine. This event is part of a series presented by the Marian

Center called "Gather @ Grotto Green." For more about the series see

www.mariancenter.net.

KIDS CAMPS ALMOST FILLED. The Young Author program is as popular as

ever, and no wonder. What kid who likes to write wouldn't want to

spend

a week in a real writing studio with real writer/teachers and a bunch

of other kids who like to write? (Where do I sign up?) We added an

extra section for Grades 4-5-6 and that's filled, too. If you are

curious about availability: Grades 2-3 with Judy Beehler has a few

spaces left. Grades 4-5-6 with Doris Hayes and Kim Suhr, two sections

are filled. Grades 7-8-9 with Joan Boyce and Pamela Parker is filled.

Grades 10-11-12 with Kim Suhr has a few spaces available. Katie Lance

is assisting for all sections. FUN FACTS: Teacher's assistant Katie

Lance attended the Young Author camps in elementary and high school,

and writer/teacher Pam Parker first came to Redbird when her son

attended the camp.

THANKS TO SPONSORS. Council for Wisconsin Writers and a few anonymous

donors provided scholarships for kids who wanted to attend the Young

Authors camps and would not have been able to without assistance. We

don't have a formal fund-raising program, but we  always know of

worthy

youngsters. One future author wanted to come so badly that she wrote

letters asking her relatives for help. When I told a friend about

this,

she reached for her purse and wrote a check for $100. Another friend

read the course description and said, "What, no sports? I'll send a

kid

to that!"  We still have two or three young writers in need of

funding.

So, if you are able to help...
