July, 2006 1. MY FAVORITE LETTER 2. FOR YOUNG AUTHORS 3. FOR ADULTS 4. NEWS OF REDBIRD WRITERS AND
FRIENDS 5. OTHER PLACES/FACES 1. MY FAVORITE LETTER Judy
Bridges In my files, and tucked in boxes and drawers where I can find them
by accident, I keep notes that are guaranteed to make me smile. This is one of
them. Redbird writer, poet, paper artist and proud grandmother Mara Ptacek sent
this email. It arrived just as we were preparing for the first session of our
summer Young Author program. Hi Judy, My
granddaughter, Sara, had some good news today. Strange Horizons accepted "Godtouched,"
a piece of fiction she had written recently. It will run in January,
2007. It is her first piece accepted for publication.
You may not remember, but Sara attended a two-week summer session at
Redbird quite a few summers ago. She felt rather challenged at the time, mainly
because she was writing in English when Spanish is her first language.
Now she's in her fifth year of medical school in Paris.
She's studying under a Erasmus scholarship, so she's had to get
her French to a good level. Still, she finds time to write. In English, I might
add.
So thanks, Judy, for getting Sara off to a good start. Mara 2. FOR YOUNG AUTHORS YOUNG AUTHORS' SUMMER PROGRAM -- For Kids Who Like to Write As I write this, the kids in our second group of grade 4-6 authors
