Simone Ferro and Friends II

Danceworks Studio Theatre
Choreographer and UWM Dance professor Simone Ferro returns to Danceworks with another evening of contemporary dance works in collaboration with Danceworks Performance Company. DPC will premiere Ferro's kinesthetic response to images from the Milwaukee Art Museum's upcoming photographic exposition Street Seen: The Psychological Gesture in American Photography (opens January 2010). Other new works on the concert will draw inspiration from Ferro's research on Brazilian popular dance. Guest artists feature violinist and UWM Music professor Bernard Zinck, Video Artist and Light Designer Iain Court, UWM alumna and New York artist Mary Madsen, and participating friends.

The resident choreographers of DPC, including Kelly Anderson, Melissa Anderson, Liz Hildebrandt, Kim Johnson-Rockafellow, Holly Keskey, Dani Kuepper, Diana LeMense, Steven Moses and Christal Wagner, will turn to the big screen for inspiration for an evening-length collaboration. Genres will generate dances that revel in romance, heighten suspense, cultivate comedy, thrill with action-packed physicality, and more! Coming soon to the Danceworks Studio Theatre near you!

DPC's virtuosic dancers present a program of sophisticated concert dance specifically designed for the professionally silly, innately slap-happy, un-thwarted dreamer of any size. Come along for dancing adventures choreographed by Artistic Director and mother of four, Dani Kuepper. Wild Things will make mischief, Frogs will romp in the swamp and Potluck will serve up macaroni and Strauss, played live by young musicians from Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Become a part of these capers by joining us for a pre-show family workshop led by DPC members that will give you and yours an inside eye to the making of the dances. You'll dance together, make masks and make some mischief of your own! For kids 4 and up and kids at heart.

See ICE (Infusing Cultures Entertainment) perform a show created for the Arts Center. Intertwining dance, music, and theatre, this performance teaches the history and culture of the Hmong people.
Make Hmong baskets, wire necklaces, storycloths, and Hmong hats.
Experience a metalsmith demonstration of Hmong forged jewelry and paj ntaub storycloth by Xao Yang Lee, an artist in the current American Story exhibition.
Listen to Hmong folk stories from members of the Hmong community.
Taste Hmong foods such as sweet rice, Hmong sausages, mustard greens soup, and homemade tofu.

The season begins with two American stories: one about the master of hip-hop dance and the other about Eastern-European music that has been handed down from generation to generation of immigrants who have made the heartland their home. Footlights continues in 2010 with explosive dance theatre, soulful jazz, and traditional Indian kathak dance. Every seat is a great seat.
The Family Series offers earlier, shorter events designed for adults and children of all ages. The Performance Series showcases the full range of each ensemble's artistry. Cinderella

This classic fairy tale follows a young woman's journey from servant to princess in a story cherished by adults and children alike. Cinderella combines the magic of fairy godmothers and spells with the true emotions of love and heartache. Period costumes, glass slippers and a pumpkin carriage whisk audiences away to an enchanting world. Sergei Prokofiev's score is played live by the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, and Milwaukee Ballet School dancers join the Company adding a delightful charm to the production.

Artistic Director Michael Pink's visual fantasy comes to life as Clara, Fritz and Marie find themselves awake in their own dream on a magical journey around the world. Elaborate scenery, stunning choreography and beautiful costumes capture the imaginations of young and old. Performed live by the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra and sung by the Milwaukee Children's Choir, Tchaikovsky's magnificent score elevates the production to a new level. Dancers from Milwaukee Ballet School highlight the youthful joy of The Nutcracker.

Discover the athleticism, strength and versatility of Milwaukee Ballet's dancers up close in the intimate Pabst Theater for this performance of three abstract works. Salvatore Aiello's Clowns and Others, set to Sergei Prokofiev's humorous piano score, features vignettes of 10 clowns portraying human traits such as compassion, grief and wonder. Luc Vanier's world premiere explores the continued collaboration between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Milwaukee Ballet through his unique blend of movement and visual imagery. The winner of Genesis, Milwaukee Ballet's 2009 international choreographic competition, returns to Milwaukee to create a new work.

Over the past 40 years, Milwaukee Ballet's performances have time and again expressed emotion and storytelling using a vivid combination of music and dance. This triple bill is no different. Jerry Opdenaker's award-winning Coeur de Basque fuses Hispanic, Arabic and non-traditional melodies in a lively choreographic tour of Spanish dance halls and Gypsy villages. Milwaukee Ballet's Petr ZahradnIcek creates another world premiere with a performance stretching the bounds between classical and contemporary dance. Sought-after choreographer Val Caniparoli returns to Milwaukee Ballet with a new work rooted in classicism yet inspired by all forms of movement.

Embark on a thrilling, long-awaited journey to Neverland as the culmination of our 40th season celebration. This world premiere production features choreography by Artistic Director Michael Pink and an original score composed for the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra by internationally acclaimed Philip Feeney (Dracula). Lavish costume designs are being created by Judanna Lynn (Scheherazade), magical lighting design by Emmy Award Winner David Grill (The Nutcracker) and imaginative stage design by Rick Graham. This performance features members of the Milwaukee Children's Choir and young dancers from Milwaukee Ballet School. A story of eternal youth and innocence, audiences young and old will celebrate the freedom and magic of childhood.
