Tony Zignego, author of MILWAUKEE'S ITALIAN HERITAGE
Thursday, March 4th - 7:00 PM Tony Zignego
One of our best-selling books of December, Anthony Zignego’s history of Italian immigrants in Milwaukee is a passionate portrait replete with personal stories and interviews. From the Gardetto family to the enterprising women of the Third Ward and on to Festa Italiana, Zignego explores the ways in which Milwaukee has been influenced and shaped by its Italian community while simultaneously explaining traditions and dispelling myths.
A University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduate, Anthony Zignego is a historian who specializes in nineteenth and twentieth century United States immigration and urban history. This is his first book.
Sandra Moats, author of CELEBRATING THE REPUBLIC
Tuesday, March 9th - 7:00 PM
From the glitz of inaugural balls to the pomp and circumstance of the State of the Union address, the American presidency is rife with symbolism and ceremony. In Celebrating the Republic, Sandra Moats examines how the first five presidents—with special emphasis on George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe—invented the American political culture that endures today. Drawing from the chaotic political culture of the founding era, these presidents used symbolism to connect the national government to the people at large. Their efforts defined republican government for the founding generation and those to follow.
Kirk Farber, author of POSTCARDS FROM A DEAD GIRL
Wednesday, March 10th - 7:00 PM
“Strange disconnects and dreams abound in this quirky story of Sid, the travel agency telemarketer. His ex-girlfriend Zoe is sending him postcards from around the world, but the relationship is over and he needs to move on … A sad, dreamy, and often funny tale, Postcards from a Dead Girl seems the perfect book to read on a grey, rain day in early spring.” -Daniel Goldin
A graduate of the Redbird Roundtables, Kirk Farber’s writing has appeared in Wisconsin People & Ideas magazine, Hobart literary magazine online, and The Great Lakes Reader anthology. Raised in Oconomowoc, Kirk attended UWM, and as a drummer played in the Milwaukee band, Spill, for eight years. This is his first novel.
Chang-rae Lee, author of THE SURRENDERED
Saturday, March 13th - 2:00 PM
“You could be saved by pure chance, or else ruined. That was the terror of it…” June Han is an 11yr old refugee of the Korean War. An American GI, Hector, brings her to an orphanage run by a missionary couple. Thirty years later, June is dying of cancer and turns to Hector to help her find her estranged son. Together they embark on a staggering journey of remembrance, revelation, and surrender that tests the limits of mercy, reconciliation, and salvation.
Chang-rae Lee is the author of Native Speaker, A Gesture Life, and Aloft. He has won numerous awards of prestige, including a Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for First Fiction. The New Yorker selected him as one of the twenty best writers under forty. He teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Princeton University.
Glen Jeansonne & Dave Luhrssen, authors of CHANGING TIMES
Thursday, March 18th - 7:00 PM
CHANGING TIMES tells the story of Obama's formative years, the family and educational experiences that shaped him, and his private life and public career. It examines the role of religion and culture in molding Obama and his public image, his status in America's class system, and the role of his wife Michelle. CHANGING TIMES finds the source of his politics less in ideology than in his personality, which is conciliatory. Obama is a man in search of what Americans hold in common instead of what keeps them apart. He has proven himself comfortable in many roles, including political activism, holding political office, practicing law, and teaching in college.
Kyoko Mori, author of YARN: REMEMBERING THE WAY HOMEK
Friday, March 19th - 7:00 PM
As steadily and quietly as her marriage falls apart, so Kyoko Mori’s understanding of knitting deepens. Interspersed with fact and history about knitting throughout, it is a touching narrative that contemplates the nature of love, loss and what holds a marriage together. Mori examines yarn as a subject to understand human nature - when to unravel, when to begin again, when to drop the stitch, and when to declare it finished.
Kyoko Mori has published a book of essays, a memoir, and three novels. Her essays and short stories have appeared in journals such as The Missouri Review, Harvard Review, and The Kenyon Review. A professor in the MFA creative writing program at George Mason University Mori holds a Ph.D. in English/Creative Writing from UWM.
A Special Book Club Evening, with Daniel Goldin & Valerie Laken
Wednesday, March 24th - 7:00 PM
Boswell proprietor Daniel Goldin regularly speaks to groups around Milwaukee about great books for book clubs, and on this night will make his first in-store presentation, complete with recommendations, give-aways, and his top reading choice for 2010 book clubs. He will be joined by special guest Valerie Laken, author of the novel DREAM HOUSE (now out in paperback!), who will give a short reading and Q&A session.
DREAM HOUSE asks the question, “What price will people pay to hold their homes and dreams together?” When Kate and Stuart Kinzler buy a run-down historic house in Ann Arbor, Michigan, they're hoping their grand renovation project can rescue their troubled marriage. Instead, they discover that years ago their home was the scene of a terrible crime—and the revelation tips the balance of their precarious union. When a mysterious man begins lurking around her yard, Kate, now alone, is forced to confront her home's dangerous past. Hers is not the only life that has crumbled under this roof. This man's family also disintegrated here, as the result of one brief act of rage that may haunt him—and this house—for years to come.
Lisa Lutz, author of THE SPELLMANS STRIKE AGAIN
Thursday, March 25th - 7:00 PM
At Spellman headquarters, it's business as unusual. Doorknobs and light fixtures are disappearing every day, Mom's been spotted crying in the pantry, and a series of increasingly demanding Spellman Rules (Rule #27: No Speaking Today) can't quite hold the family together. This final installment in the bestselling, award-nominated series is hands-down the most hilarious, thrilling, and moving one yet. And it proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Isabel Spellman, no matter how much she matures, will never be able to follow Rule #1: Act Normal.
Lisa Lutz is the author of The Spellman Files, Curse of the Spellmans, a national best-seller and nominee for the 2008 Edgar® Award for Best Novel, and most recently Revenge of the Spellmans. A motion picture adaptation of The Spellman Files is in development with Paramount Pictures.
Christopher Moore, author of BITE ME!
Wednesday, March 31st - 7:00 PM
The sequel to Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck, Bite Me brings together our favorite recurring characters - Jody & Tommy, Abby von Normal & Foo Dog, gay cops Cavuto & Rivera, the Emperor of San Francisco & his “men” - to save San Francisco (yet again!) from the evils of the undead. In this wacky tale, Christopher Moore brings us a herd of vampire cats, a ninja assassin and even a reference to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
The “Author Guy” has written eleven side-splittingly funny novels, including the best-selling Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal. More notably, he has worked as a roofer, a grocery clerk, a hotel night auditor, and insurance broker, a waiter, a photographer, and a rock and roll DJ. Did we mention he’s hilarious?

Redbird Studio - GETTING PUBLISHED IN 2010: FRESH APPROACHES TO TODAY'S MARKET
http://www.redbirdstudio.com
THE REDBIRDS PRESENT
A joint Redbird Studio-Redbird-RedOak Event
With authors Kirk Farber, Karen McQuestion, Shannon Jackson Arnold and Doug Jacobson
Panel moderated by Judy Bridges
Thurs. March 11, 6:30pm
(RSVP to Judy or Kim. Goodwill donation, $10 at door)
Oh, the gloom and doom. Everywhere you turn you hear more bad news about the publishing business. Book publishers are consolidating. Periodicals are going out of business. Newspapers are folding. You hear that only the top money making authors get published and unless you know people in high places, you may as well forget about it.
Well, plug your ears. Better yet, come spend an evening with Redbird authors who are making it happen in spite of the bad news -- or maybe because of it. As traditional markets grow tighter, new markets, new ways of getting published and new ways of approaching the markets, become more important. These are exciting days for men and women who not only write well, but are finding innovative ways to get noticed and get published.
We'll meet in an intimate setting in the Marian Center where the panelists can share their experiences and bright ideas with you. They will answer your questions about creating a platform, dealing with agents and publishers, self-publishing, social networking, and more.
Kirk Farber's debut novel, Postcards from a Dead Girl, will be published by Harper Perennial in March 2010. Postcards was a semi-finalist in the first Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest. His short story Salting the Walks was a finalist in a statewide fiction contest which resulted in publication in Wisconsin People & Ideas magazine. His short fiction also appears online in Hobart literary journal. Kirk will be a staff presenter at this year's Pikes Peak Writer's Conference in Colorado Springs, and he'll be participating in Denver's Publishing Institute as a featured author. He currently lives in Colorado and is working on his second novel.
Karen McQuestion is the author of six books available on Amazon's Kindle, one of which, A Scattered Life, has been optioned for film. Her other writing credits include essays in Newsweek, the Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Denver Post, Wisconsin Academy Review, Generations magazine and several anthologies. In addition, she was awarded a winter/spring 2003 Ragdale Foundation residency for fiction. More recently she's served as a commentator for the local NPR affiliate, WUWM. She lives in Hartland, WI with her husband and children.
Shannon Jackson Arnold is the author of Everybody Loves Ice Cream: The Whole Scoop on America's Favorite Treat, the past editor of OHIO Magazine, a food and travel writer and, for the past decade, a writing teacher and coach through her business, The Inspired Writer. In September 2008, she started a blog (http://www.theinspiredwriter.org/blog) and has since branched into Twitter and Facebook. For Shannon, social media is a place to test out new writing, meet people and mine material for her forthcoming series of guidebooks for spiritual seekers.
Douglas W. Jacobson is an engineer, business owner and World War Two history enthusiast. Doug has traveled extensively in Europe researching stories of the courage of common people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. His debut novel, Night of Flames: A Novel of World War II was published in 2007 by McBooks Press, and was released in paperback in 2008. Night of Flames won the 2007 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Wisconsin Library Association. Doug has also published articles on Belgium's WW2 escape organization, the Comet Line and other European resistance organizations. Doug is finishing up his second historical novel set in Europe during WW2, focusing on one of history's most notorious war crimes.
