MINDY SMITH
With opening performance by Erick Baker
Friday, October 16, 2009 8:00pm
Doors open 7:15pm
Tickets: $14 advance / $16 day of show / $5 student with ID / $120 reserved table for 8 (sales tax included)
Few singers are better prepared than Mindy Smith to sing convincingly about a wide range of emotions. Her pure, unaffected soprano illuminates her words and sentiments - even when it seems as if she is singing for just herself. Her performances feel effortless as she steps up to the microphone.
It is a challenge to classify Smith's musical style, but Americana with a twist come relatively close. Her recent CD, Stupid Love, reflects Smith's diverse personal tastes. Some arrangements incorporate banjo or slide guitar; others are graced with strings, and there are rock influences as well. Says Smith of her music that comes from the heart in her recent CD, 'Everything here is definitely from my personal experience. Heartbreak, healing, all that stuff
it's all legit.' And you can hear that honesty in every note she sings.

The 1920s were about a lot more than flappers and the Charleston. The country and Cedarburg were struggling with the challenges of illness and epidemics, social issues, and technological changes that would change the way people lived and survived. Take a peek into the dark past to see what is uncovered during this year's popular Gothic History Tour.
The 90-minute walking tours through the Cedarburg National Historic District take place rain or (moon) shine. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour group sizes are limited and tour groups are pre-assigned (let the Center know if you want to be in the same group as family and/or friends.).
The sixth Gothic History Tour is supported by Legacy Scrapbooks in Cedarburg, Lori's Costume Shop in West Bend, Frenz Market and Garden Center in Thiensville, Noelle's Bake Shoppe & Cupcakery in Cedarburg, The Washington House Inn, Cedar Creek Settlement, Cream & Crepe Cafe in the Settlement, City of Cedarburg, City of Cedarburg Parks & Recreation Department, and the Cedarburg Fire Department.

TANGLEWEED
Saturday, April 17, 2010 8:00pm
Doors open 7:15pm
Tickets: $14 advance / $16 day of show / $5 student with ID / $120 reserved table of 8 (sales tax included)
Tangleweed is a band of five forward-thinking musical reactionaries from Chicago, Illinois. While the band's instrumentation is standard bluegrass, their music is anything but. With a repertoire both broad and deep, one listener described them as sounding like 'a band playing on a pirate ship off the coast of New Orleans in the 1920s.'
The group has stayed true to its roots while evolving and expanding its repertoire over the years. The group's first CD, Just a Spoonful (and Other Folksongs of Rural Cook County), was recorded in a makeshift studio with vintage analog equipment and a setup modeled after the early field recordings that inspired the band. Their second CD, Where You Been So Long, retained their live energy while covering a broader swath of American music with original songs mixed with classic bluegrass, old-time country, Irish fiddle tunes, rockers, and mountain music. The third and most recent CD, Most Folk Heroes Started Out as Criminals, retains 100% acoustic instrumentation, but is varied with the addition of the erhu, autoharp, tenor guitar, and accordion. The result is the representation of the past and future of string band music.
Tangleweed combines high-energy performances with impeccable musicianship and a wide breadth of influences to create a unique sound that is simultaneously modern and old-timey. The band has been hailed in reviews worldwide as a welcome breath of fresh air for lovers of stomping string band music and high lonesome harmonies.

Marcus Center for the Performing Arts
Based on the atire by American novelist Sinclair Lewis (which was also the basis for an Academy Award-winning film starring Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons), Elmer Gantry mixes traditional operatic forms with vibrant gospel hymns and ensemble to explore the comples and sometimes conflicted role of religion in American life. This quintessentially American story of love and corruption follows a fradulent, womanizer through both his rise to power and fall from grace in early 20th century rural America.
