Doors open 7:15pm
Tickets: $14 advance / $16 day of show / $5 student with ID / $120 reserved table for 8 (sales tax included)
Few singers are better prepared than Mindy Smith to sing convincingly about a wide range of emotions. Her pure, unaffected soprano illuminates her words and sentiments - even when it seems as if she is singing for just herself. Her performances feel effortless as she steps up to the microphone.
It is a challenge to classify Smith's musical style, but Americana with a twist come relatively close. Her recent CD, Stupid Love, reflects Smith's diverse personal tastes. Some arrangements incorporate banjo or slide guitar; others are graced with strings, and there are rock influences as well. Says Smith of her music that comes from the heart in her recent CD, 'Everything here is definitely from my personal experience. Heartbreak, healing, all that stuff
it's all legit.' And you can hear that honesty in every note she sings.

Doors open 7:15pm
Tickets: $14 advance / $16 day of show / $5 student with ID / $120 reserved table of 8 (sales tax included)
Tangleweed is a band of five forward-thinking musical reactionaries from Chicago, Illinois. While the band's instrumentation is standard bluegrass, their music is anything but. With a repertoire both broad and deep, one listener described them as sounding like 'a band playing on a pirate ship off the coast of New Orleans in the 1920s.'
The group has stayed true to its roots while evolving and expanding its repertoire over the years. The group's first CD, Just a Spoonful (and Other Folksongs of Rural Cook County), was recorded in a makeshift studio with vintage analog equipment and a setup modeled after the early field recordings that inspired the band. Their second CD, Where You Been So Long, retained their live energy while covering a broader swath of American music with original songs mixed with classic bluegrass, old-time country, Irish fiddle tunes, rockers, and mountain music. The third and most recent CD, Most Folk Heroes Started Out as Criminals, retains 100% acoustic instrumentation, but is varied with the addition of the erhu, autoharp, tenor guitar, and accordion. The result is the representation of the past and future of string band music.
Tangleweed combines high-energy performances with impeccable musicianship and a wide breadth of influences to create a unique sound that is simultaneously modern and old-timey. The band has been hailed in reviews worldwide as a welcome breath of fresh air for lovers of stomping string band music and high lonesome harmonies.

Marcus Center for the Performing Arts
Based on the atire by American novelist Sinclair Lewis (which was also the basis for an Academy Award-winning film starring Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons), Elmer Gantry mixes traditional operatic forms with vibrant gospel hymns and ensemble to explore the comples and sometimes conflicted role of religion in American life. This quintessentially American story of love and corruption follows a fradulent, womanizer through both his rise to power and fall from grace in early 20th century rural America.

Radio Golf
by August Wilson
March 3 - 28
Stiemke Theater
A dynamic and surprisingly humorous play about a successful real estate developer and the challenges he faces when he sets his sights on becoming the city's first black mayor. Supporting his efforts are his wife, an ambitious public relations executive, and his business partner, a Tiger Woods fanatic (who gets involved in a radio station scheme). But when he's about to demolish the decaying home of the legendary Aunt Esther, secrets are revealed that could be his undoing. This is the Tony Award-nominated finale of August Wilson's unprecedented ten-play cycle chronicling African-American life in the 20th century. (Contains adult language and content)
Running Time: 2 hours, 30 minutes
SURPRISING, SUSPENSEFUL AND CROWD-ROUSING. The final play in August Wilson's MAGNIFICENT cycle has CRACKLING COMEDY, ENGAGING SNAP AND THEATRICAL ZEST. In Mr. Wilson's world, THE SONG, IT SEEMS, HASN'T ENDED, AFTER ALL. -The New York Times

SEVEN KEYS TO SLAUGHTER PEAK
by Joseph Hanreddy. Based on the novel by Earl Derr Biggers and the play by George M. Cohan
March 23 - April 18
Quadracci Powerhouse
On a stormy winter night, a brash pulp-fiction novelist holes himself up in a deserted Wisconsin summer resort to win a bet. He has wagered that he can write a best-seller in 24 hours, and Slaughter Peak Lodge is the perfect place to get his creative juices flowing. Best of all, he's got the only key - or so he thinks. It's not long before his night of perfect solitude unravels into a tangled web of criminal conspiracy, romance, intrigue, and murder that could have come straight from one of his novels! Fact and fiction dissolve into delicious mayhem and hilarity in Joe Hanreddy's grand finale as Artistic Director. Based on (and formerly titled) Seven Keys to Baldpate, this delightful comic caper features The Rep's Resident Acting Company.

Beane is an exile from life - an oddball. His well-meaning sister, Joan, and brother-in-law, Harry, try and make time for him in their busy lives, but no one can get through. Following a burglary on Beane's apartment, Joan is baffled to find her brother blissfully happy and tries to unravel the story behind his mysterious new love, Molly. Funny, enchanting and wonderfully touching, John Kolvenbach's offbeat comedy is a rhapsody to the power of love in all its forms.

The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are anybody come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a good ole boy. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength-and love-which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. Immortalized in the classic 1989 films starring Sally Fields and Julia Roberts.
