for Wisconsin Writers
Award Winners for Work Published in 2007
The Council for
Wisconsin Writers has named winners of its awards for work published in 2007. Fourteen
Wisconsin writers selected by out-of-state judges were honored at its luncheon
banquet 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Wisconsin Club, 900 W Wisconsin Ave in
Milwaukee.

The
Council's Christopher Latham Sholes Award of $500, for outstanding support and
encouragement of Wisconsin writers, will go to Linda Aschbrenner of Marshfield,
WI, editor and publisher of Free Verse and Marsh River Editions.
Winners in each of the
eight writing awards categories receive $500 and a one week residency at
Edenfred, the Madison creative artists residency program dedicated to
supporting new creative work, part of the Terry Family Foundation.
Jean
Feraca of Madison won the Kingery-Derleth Award for Book-Length Non-Fiction for
I Hear Voices: A Memoir of Love, Death and the Radio (University of
Wisconsin Press). Rebecca O'Conner of Banning, Calif., judged.
Benjamin
Percy of Stevens Point won the Anne Powers Award for Book-Length Fiction for Refresh,
Refresh
(Graywolf Press). Madeline Mysko of Baltimore, Md., judged.
Paul Zimmer, Soldiers Grove,
won the Posner Award for Book-Length Poetry for Crossing to Sunlight
Revisited: New and Selected Poems (The University of Georgia Press). Susan Elbe
of Madison received an honorable mention for her collection Eden in the
Rearview Mirror
(Word Press). Bruce Bennett of Aurora, N.Y., judged.
Abby
Frucht of Oshkosh won the Kay W. Levin Short Nonfiction Award for her article
"Blue Shirt" in Brevity Journal; Frank Bures of Verona received an honorable
mention for "Spirits in the Material World" in Washington Post Magazine. Susan Morehouse of
Alfred, N.Y., judged.
Christi
Clancy of Whitefish Bay won the Larry and Eleanor Sternig Short Fiction Award
for "Little Frozen Universes" in Hobart Journal. Honorable mentions
went to John Campbell of Brookfield for "Breaking into Print" from Timber
Creek Review
and Abby Frucht of Oshkosh for "Is Glistening" in Narrative Magazine. Tatyana Mischel of
Seattle, Wash., judged.
Ann
Bausum, Beloit, won the Arthur Tofte/Betty Ren Wright Children's Literature
Award for her book Muckrakers: How Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair, and Lincoln
Steffens Helped Expose Scandal, Inspire Reform, and Invent Investigative
Journalism
(National Geographic Society). Honorable mention went to Dori Chaconas of
Germantown for Pennies in a Jar (Peachtree Publisher). Cathy Nelson of
Minneapolis, Minn., judged.
Tom
Davis of Green Bay won the Ellis-Henderson Award for Outdoor Writing for "Middle Lake" in Sporting Classics.
Amy Jenkins, Wauwatosa, received an honorable mention for "Shepherded
Flights" in The Florida Review. Stephen Bodio of Magdalena, N.M., judged.
David
Krump of LaCrosse won the Niedecker Award for Five Poems for work published in
various journals. Debra Bruce of Chicago, Ill., judged.
The
Council for Wisconsin Writers is a non-profit organization of volunteers
established in 1964 to promote awareness of Wisconsin's literary heritage.
Edenfred, established in 2004, is a part of the Terry Family Foundation, a non-profit
charitable organization.
